How did MCL driver foot peg lowering kit work for you?

Post by Yamahama »

I've done the analysis using cycle-ergos.com and it looks perfect, but a few questions if you've used these:
  1. Were you able to make adjustments to rear brake and shifter to meet your needs if any change was needed post installation--i.e., was shifting/braking adversely affected w/ install of the MCL kit?
  2. If you're scraping pegs w/ the MCL kit, what sort of chicken strip widths are on your front or rear tires?
  3. If you're not scraping pegs w/ MCL, what sort of chicken strip widths do your front and rear tires show?
  4. Did you notice a significant difference in ergos w/ them installed?
  5. Would you install them again?
Thanks in advance. I was leaning towards R1200RTW and now after good test rides on both bikes I'm leaning towards FJR, with ergos being the only issue of merit for me.

Raise the seat to the higher level and see if you can get used to the OEM pegs. A LOT of people that have lowered their pegs returned them to normal. It's just way too easy to drag them. One of those mods that's more hassle than its worth for a vast majority of people. Obviously, if you have some kind of pain you just can't get past and you have to have the lowered pegs, you'll have to adjust your riding accordingly.

Good luck!

I like mine, although if you're an extreme leaner, which I'm generally not, they do scrape more than the stock.

Love mine.

I have a 33" in-seam, and they make the long distances tolerable in terms of knee and hip pain.

I can take them off in about 10 minutes, if necessary.

I love my MCL peg lowers. I say it helps keep you out of the monkey and the football position.

They do help but Your twisties won't be near as fun. I prefer highway pegs because they let me stretch out a little more. Ymmv

I'll second the highway pegs. I have a set of Garuld's pegs and love them. Fold up nice and out of the way while hitting the twisties and make a huge difference on the highway.

I like both, but the new Russell has raised me some, so I may be able to do away with the peg lowering brackets. This would make braking and gear-changing a little easier as you do have to twist your foot a little to reach the brake and gear levers.

I rarely scrape pegs, but occasionally hit a bump in a corner and scrape. I'm kind of a middlin FJR rider. Some faster than me, some slower than me.

I cannot imagine doing anything except straight flat boring roads with the driver's peg lowering kit...which is fine until the turn comes.

The OP has a 15ES. Changing the preload setting could help with the potential scraping. I am not a fast rider but have been able to drag some hardware at times. I really could not see lowering the footpegs much without getting into the pegs really hard. My Gen 1 with upgraded shock kept the back and middle under control, but I did have a near disaster with the Highway pegs while chasing a Faster rider in North Georgia. I will not likely be re=-installing highway pegs due to the riding that I like to do. But if you are not a chaser of faster FJRs, you may be fine.
I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!

So, my advice is no driver footpeg lowering kit.

Ask Wheatie how to drive through a funeral procession. (Civilized, my ass.)

And to stay on topic, I traded the Vstar because it had a very small lean angle before scraping hard parts and lifting the rear tire. I'd consider raising the seat and handlebars before lowering the pegs, even though I ride like a Grandma.

Don't know, technically I've never done it.

They work great. Adjusting brake and shift takes less than 2 minutes. World of difference. After switching to a Laam, I was raised high enough that the lowering brackets aren’t as critical.
