Good touring screen for 6'3" rider??

Post by Yamahama »

The oem screen is 4-5" short to get into full quiet for me on '15 ES. I see the Yam tour screen option is +4" which may still keep me a little up in the buffeting zone. Any testimony for taller riders on an effective aftermarket screen?

Well I am not tall, but the +4+2 VStream would probably work. I had the taller Yamaha screen and didn't like the airflow. VStream is awesome. You don't need it all the way up to get out of the noisy air.

I am 6'3" tall and long waited. So most of my height is from the waist UP... I had teh stock windscreen on my 05' It had horrible wind noise and buffeting. The guy I bought it from gave me a laminar lip he never used.. That helped quite a bit but still not what I wanted. I bought the CalSci biggest windscreen I could get which is +6" taller than stock and + 4 wider. It works like a dream. If I want it quiet I raise it which I then look through, or I can lower it to get more air and look over it but a ton of noise.

I will caution you on big screens. When they are all the way up they create and back to front air current. While quiet when it rains the rain comes from OVER YOUR SHOULDER onto the backside of the windscreen... It takes only a second or two to get the windscreen adjusted to stop that but it is an odd feeling

The '14/'15s may have helped w/ the potential for back to front air. This describes it: 'a central vent beneath the instrument panel cools the rider and reduces negative pressure for less buffeting...'

Thanks for your reply Squid

I just picked up a '15 Saturday the air flow is MUCH better and no negative pressure with the shield up. I was comfortable in 95+ degrees(with mesh gear). My concern is when cold season comes!

I took first ride today on my '15 with the Yamaha Touring tall screen and wasn't that impressed. All the way down the wind was on my helmet but pretty smooth. As I raised the screen my head was out of the wind but a got a very annoying vibration and thumping noise on top of my helmet along with a lot of back pressure. I wasn't expecting it to be a perfect shield but I was expecting it to be better than it is. I've got a tall V steam coming. Hope that is better.

After using the Vstrean tall touring screen I can say it is as close to perfect as I think I will get. I don't like the way the top of it moves around in the wind when in turbulence, but it does provide a nice quiet smooth bubble of air with almost no helmet noise or vibrations.

Yes the Gen3 is much better with its wind management but a good aftermarket shield is still advisable. It is also worth noting that the Gen 2 shields all moved around a lot while the Gen3 is much more solid.

For a tall person I would look at the Cee Bailey. They only sell the "reverse contour" for the Gen3 which means it has that "flip" at the top. That little flip is worth several inches of windshield height.

I had the Cee Bailey flip on my ST13, but wasn't a fan of the distortion that tended to get in the way sometimes.... on my Gen3, I started down the V-stream path... first the medium, then the tall, then tried the medium again, ended up with the tall. I also put spacers under the front mount points to tilt it back a touch. Reasons to like is the scalloped cutouts on the sides let some cool air hit my arms, good in the heat, not much of a negative in the cold. There is a tad more air flow over your hands, all of this depending on the height adjustment. I find I can run the tall one all the way down (top of it well below my chin), get lots of air for the top vent of my Neotec. If I put it all the way up, I'm looking through it, and naturally there is a little more backpressure behind your head, but pretty good compared to most IMHO. The only improvement to this one now would be to flatten out the top contour (I think the curve is a tad too much, judging by the flatter Rifle I had on the Gen2).
The problem with windshields is you spend money trying them until you find one that works for you.

Ray that is true about the distortion line at the curve of the Cee Bailey. I had forgotten that part. Pop did not like that on his taller Cee Bailey but he never complains about it with the shorter Cee Bailey he is running now.

He said that it interfered with him mostly in parking lots. I rode it and found that to be the case. At low speeds when you are looking closer to the bike rather than down the road it did get a little irritating.

I have a 09 FJR with a large "barn door" Cee-Bailey's screen with the reverse flip. I am 6' even. It is great in cold weather but a bit large in hot weather. I look over the screen so I have no issue with distortion. (what did I miss Redfish and Ray?)
