Valve shim size?

Post by ScottMDMC »

Hi all,
I need to get into my 06 FJR and check my valve clearances. I am starting to get a ticking noise at start up. Before I tear into it I was curious what the size of the shims are, width wise. I have a set of shims from a drz400 and my buddy may still have his from his crf250. It would be awesome one of the sets were the correct size.
Thanks, Scott

I'd be surprised if it was your valves that were ticking.
More likely the pair valves if you still have them.
Might also be the injectors.

Thanks to both replies. Looks like I need to do some research.

Somebody out there probably knows what I'm talking about or maybe my dementia is kicking in. There is a calculator that will tell what shim you need after you measure the clearance. http://vicdzen.narod.ru/index/0-2 This may be it but no guarantees.

The ticking noise may be the cam chain tensioner going bad.
My wife asked me why I speak so softly around the house. I said that I was worried that someone was listening. She laughed, I laughed, Alexa laughed.

Or maybe just needing to be re-tensioned. Only takes a couple minutes.

Re-tensioned? please explain that one that's new to me

If he has never replaced the cam chain tensioner from new ...... it needs replacing now!

Yeah. that's what I was thinking. There is a way to check if the tensioner is working properly, though. Loose cam chain would definitely cause ticking type noise. For the damage that a bad tensioner can cause the cost of replacement is minuscule!

When you replace shims and take the cams out, on right side of the frame there is a hole where you can loosen the chain tensioner. Been a long time since I've done but it is in the service manual. You have to loosen the cam tension to remove the cam shafts, but you can loosen the tension and I think the right tension is restored by the spring in the tensioner.

The chain noise can be described as marbles in a coffee can
