Valve Check Timing

With my bike not running right, the coolant leak at the thermostat housing, and 24k on the clock, I'm wondering if it would just be wise to let the dealer so the repairs since it's all tied together. Really, the additional required labor to replace the tstat is nothing if you're doing a valve clearance check. Already have to drain the coolant. Replacing the plugs only take a few minutes since the head is being pulled.

I went through the steps to adjust the valves and just don't feel comfortable doing that myself, so that's not an option. I know some people think it's not even required..

Thoughts?

Called the dealership and they said around $500 for everything. Includes plugs, tstat replacement, valve check, throttle body sync, oil change... think I'm going to give that a try.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, that seems like a reasonable budget. Make sure that includes a complete coolant change and not just a draw down and top off.

Just out of curiosity related to this post. Has anyone found an FJR out of spec at the 26k mark? I've done three checks and 94,000 on the bike. At the third check is was still in speck tight side but still inside tolerance. Will I do the 105,000 check? I don't know.

One or two needed love, but still, you just never know.

With the problems I've been having the last few weeks, it's with a look.

Also, it includes new coolant. Bad news is I just paid to have a flush and fill done in May. That was in Vegas, though...

Chances are at 24k, no shim changes are needed, but have the dealership document the clearances for you. You might be able to fix a coolant leak by tightening a hose clamp unless its leaking around the housing....
The budget number sounds about right........

Answering the original question:

According to a poll taken on the other FJR Forum, 21 of the 153 who responded (~14%) said that their 1st valve check required adjustment. 7 of those were done at the dealership and 14 were DIY guys.

Mine 09 needed a valve adj at 36k. I will leave the adjustment to the dealer but I don't mind doing the check. If you or the dealer do it depends on your wrenching skill and willingness to part with a few bucks.
