Garauld Gen2/3 Subframe Stiffy kit

It will reduce the chance of a subframe fracture. If one were to occur, it would keep the pieces together, although they may flop around a bit...

I might be interested in 1 of these. I go camping all the time, although I am careful about only putting light stuff in the trunk, I can see the abuse it takes on dirt roads in VT. Last thing I need out there is subframe problems. Do you think you could reinforce 1 of those for my specific camping requirements? I use a 55L Givi topbox with the Premier Cycle rack.
How well has this farkle been tested? Has anybody overloaded it to see what, if any, is the breaking point? Garauld, please elaborate on the increased stiffness to the subframe with the 'stiffy'. If Yamaha states only 5lbs, what is the max load with the 'stiffy'? Again, could 1 be reinforced for those of us that do maybe 15 or 10% gravel/dirt road travels. Thank you.

I'm currently in a fatigue and damage tolerance class, and can second that. I can also say that the number of cycles to failure in anything but certain ferrous materials is finite. These certain ferrous materials have an infinite fatigue life if the ultimate stress never exceeds the endurance limit, but the average FJR needs to weigh less than the average diesel locomotive, so this isn't feasible.

Another thought is that cracks propagate most easily under tensile stress. The way most top cases are attached puts the subframe in a situation which puts a heck of a bending moment on the rear of the frame, and with bending comes tension on the fibers outside the neutral axis. Figure out how to mount a top case without a bending moment, no more problems.

The last thought to leave you with is that S-N curves are plotted on log/log scales, which means that extra weight you slap on there isn't just an exponential decrease to the number of cycles to failure, its an exponentially exponential decrease. So, when you ask Garauld how much it helps, he could answer that if you provided him the cyclical loading tensor over the expected service life of your bike and the thermal conditions you'll be riding in along with any chemical influences you might encounter and any manufacturing defects the frame on your bike might have and he could crunch the numbers and get you within about 35% (on a log/log scale)

I typically have the top case (Givi E52 Maxia) in place all the time. Usually it's just got jacket liners and such in it, but the wife does use it as a backrest and we may load it up a bit more on long trips. I also have the Givi steel SR357 rack in place of the OEM plastic grab rail. Would it be overkill to add the Stiffy to my setup?
