Cruise Control issue

Post by CollingsBob »

The dealership contacted me today regarding the cruise control on the ‘17 that I traded in last year and asked me if there was any special trick to turning it on.
The cruise turns on, but doesn’t “set”..The tech at the dealer figures it’s just a dirty/corroded switch from sitting for 9 months..
What’s the opinion of the masses?

Tell them to clean and lube the rear brake pivot to start with. Maybe check the front brake switch and the clutch switch.
Wasn't there a recall for the front brake switch on your bike? Was it done?

Brake switch should cause the brake light to illuminate but it only takes a fraction of a second to un-set the cruise.

Was this year effected by brake switch recall? It made the cruise not engage.

What keeps cruise from engaging...... what those guys already said.
1. Clutch or front brake switch sticking
2. Faulty front brake switch (recall was for all Gen3+)
3. Rear pedal sticking/brake switch needs adjusting in case they are inadvertently riding the brake
4. Corroded wheel sensor(s)... remove and clean off any white corrosion, including the hole it goes in, lightly smear some grease to slow down/prevent any further corrosion (the adapter plate is not painted on the inside of the hole). Can go into diagnostics and there may be "abnormal signals from wheel sensor" error codes. Don't need to clear them, as they will likely be stored, not active (unless showing on the display).

Had the same problem when we arrived in New Hampshire. I had bled the brakes before we left but apparently didn't bleed the rear brake properly. The pedel was a smidge spongy. Sure enough, pump up the rear pedal and the cruise started working. I suppose that tiny bit of air had the rear pedel sagging JUST enough to engage the microswitch.

With the FJR, it seems to ALWAYS be something mundane ....

What kind of warranty do they offer on used bikes? 10 seconds or 10 feet? Yet your expected to account on something that's been in there possession and not even legally yours for 9 months?

Sounds like they need you more than you need them.

His brandly new BMW R1300GS was bought from this dealer using the FJR as a trade. I expect it is worthwhile to remain on their good side!

CC didn't work on a used '13 FJR I bought years ago. Like you, the light would come on but it wouldn't set. Turned out to be a dirty switch at the handlebar. Has worked fine since I cleaned it out.

I had the same issue on my '13. The switch worked for a little while after cleaning but acted up again within a month. I replaced it myself, no problems since. Been almost 2 yrs and I use CC a LOT.
