Pressing in new wheel bearings.

It seems a pretty simple task that I could do myself, or I think so looking at DIY videos online. However, I have never done this before myself and wheels are not something I want to dick up.

So. Anyone know a local machinist or someone skilled at this who can press them in for me? Or, if you have tips and tricks and maybe tool(s) I could borrow, to do it myself - I would be grateful!

The trick with bearings is to keep them nice and square when pressing them in. A press or arbor makes the job easy. It can be done by hand with patience. If you employ a bit of ingenuity and a few large washers and ready rod, you can squeeze them in quite well.

Also, using thermal expansion and contraction helps a lot.

If you can find a section of PVC pipe that will clear the wheel housing, yet catch the bearings outer edge, you can use that to drive 'em in Sam.

Silverback's tip will help. Freeze the bearings and heat the wheel first.

You absolutely want to try to start the bearing flat and square to the hole because if it starts off cocked you are screwed, but not in a good way. (Hmm, I was used wurds that could be rearranged in a bad way. Never would happen here.)

I would not do this without an arbor press. I just did mine. way to easy to screw it up by hand. press made it easy peasy

Arbor press If the bearing gets cocked ... You'll buy a wheel.

Take your time and they will go in fine. I've to this day never used a press on bike wheels. Nor have I used one on the steering stem bearings, that would be a real bitch.

I've not done a set on an FJR, but I have done several on other bikes. I use a bearing driver set similar to this. You do have to be careful to keep it straight, but with this tool it's pretty easy.

Changed out my front bearing a couple months ago. Not difficult. Just need to take your time. I heated the hub and had the new bearings in the freezer overnight. Used the old bearing and a large socket to tap the new bearing in, slow and steady.

I had changed the bearings on my FJ a couple times and the FJR was pretty much the same process.

I have a good selection of sockets, so I just match one up to the bearing OD and drive them in, after cooling the bearing in the freezer.

Bearings were mentioned at our camping meet this weekend and I see this thread. At what interval should the wheel bearings be replaced? I just passed the 80K mark on the way home yesterday.

When I pull the wheels for tires, I put the axle back through the bearing and roll it. Then I try to wiggle it. If I feel roughness or can feel play, like the axle will wiggle at all, I replace them.

At every tire change, stick your finger in and roll the bearing. Your fingers are sensitive enough to pick up notchiness, grit, loose, etc. If they're smooth and no play, regardless of age, call them good. OldGuy's got a good check there too which I would do in addition to the finger if there's any question.

Funny, but I keep a spare set of bearings on hand just in case..... done this for almost every bike I owned... never replaced one yet.
