First reaction--you probably don't want to call 911 every time you (somebody) goes down. I don't think so, anyway. I don't know if it's "most," or "many" crashes, but for sure some crashes don't result in a need for emergency response. Wonder how they dealt with that.

If it only called 911 when you were involved in an accident you would be connected with a dispatcher at that point you could say sorry I am ok no need for response. If you don't respond emergency rescue would be dispatched to the GPS coordinates provided by the device making the call. Just my take on how it might work. If this is the case I would rather make contact all the time and say I don't need assistance as opposed to laying on a hillside out of view hoping someone finds me unable to move due to injury.

Procedurally, your spot on (I work for the 2nd largest 911 PSAP in North America). That being said, I suspect the software rely's on the new IP911 spec, which allows for SMS help requests. Their are still huge areas of the country that don't support this (both the US and Canada). Additionally, their are special rules for implementing SMS 911 Requests (SMS 911 Requests have to be 'pre-authorized') that aren't present elsewhere in the world.

So in short, great idea, but the industry needs to catch up before it'll gain widespread acceptance in North America.
