First Gen ABS
So, through a series of unfortunate events, I had the opportunity to try out the ABS on the 05. Apparently the front works as designed, however, I did notice the rear slides out. On the 07, it would buzz the pedal immediately. Instinct takes over and I let up, so I am not able to say if the 05 will eventually catch on and release the rear.
I bought a (rather pricey) extended warranty for the 05, and wonder if I should send it to the shop to be repaired or is the rear ABS a little laggy? From automotive experience, I know that some early ABS systems took a bit to "wake up" at slower speeds. Hence the question. Anyone with first gen ABS models have an answer on this?
Thanks.

My 2005 rear works as I expect it to......if I lock it....it "shudders".

Re: First Gen ABS
It seems common among the '05s that the rear ABS block freezes up and the rear ABS won't work. So far, you are the first one I have heard of that has warranty. Most buy a used block off eBay or something. Some just continue with broken rear ABS. With warranty, I'd have it replaced.
You may wanna test it and see if it is actually not working. They're pretty good, but one time a long time ago, my rear slid. Since then, my ABS has worked flawlessly, so it musta just been the exact right conditions.

Re: First Gen ABS
I test mine weekly in light gravel on pavement just to make them work and keep circulating fluid. Good Idea? I have no Idea. Plus it keeps me used to what ABS feels like so I don't freak out.

Re: First Gen ABS
+1 to what AJ says. I've had the rear slide before with the right (wrong?) tire on there. We won't go to which one it was or we'll have to talk about what oil I run and which lube my pillion prefers. But the ABS is fully functional as it is.
The good news is that testing the rear wheel ABS is a non-event. Just go down the road in a relatively straight line and hammer the back binder and see what happens. If you get pulsing, breathe a sigh of relief. If not, and the rear wheel actually locks up, you then know the rear spool is fetched up in the hydraulic block.
All of that said, I feel like it is the front spool that gets hung up[ more often due to inactivity. Seems to me that people cause the rear to lock way more often than the front, unless you are one of those front brake only type of guys.

Re: First Gen ABS
Is there a service test that can be done to actuate the abs while the bike is stationary? Seems like the Gen2 had a test you could perform to check the operation. I haven't had the time to read through the gen 1 manual yet. I did try to buy one of the ABS test connectors, but they are apparently not made anymore.
I will do the road test soon enough when I get some time if nothing else.

I was going to say that there is supposed to be a connection that will activate it for fluid change. It's no longer available?

I figure you paid for the warranty, you might as well use it, at least let them check it out.

That's on the other sandbox which I sometimes can see, sometimes can't. I'll check it when I get a moment. Waiting to take my econ final right now...blech.

Re: First Gen ABS
You do not activate it for fluid change...... you're thinking of BMW's where the pump has to pump to move fluid.clocklaw wrote:I was going to say that there is supposed to be a connection that will activate it for fluid change. It's no longer available?

Re: First Gen ABS
I did the two functional tests today. The rear felt weak during the pulsing, but still pulsed. Just for S&G's I did the tests a few extra times each and the rear started to respond better. I'm guessing I had the gummed up spool as well. Not sure how much difference cycling it will make, however, I did get the chance to test it today thanks to Wichita traffic. Seems to work.
Fluid flush and refill is next on my list. I think this will help ensure the longevity of the system.

I actually have a similar issue going on.... just haven't got very deep into it yet.

The guy at the other sandbox had suggested connecting a remotely located switch to the ABS test coupler making it a cinch to periodically cycle the spool valves.raYzerman wrote:I actually have a similar issue going on.... just haven't got very deep into it yet.

Nice write up over there, next fluid change I will make sure to cycle through this, just need to locate that plug.ionbeam wrote:The guy at the other sandbox had suggested connecting a remotely located switch to the ABS test coupler making it a cinch to periodically cycle the spool valves.

Re: First Gen ABS
Buried in all the words at the beginning is a locator guide for both Gen I and Gen II (if you didn't see it). The Gen 1 connector mounted to the frame is easy to find. The Gen II connector above the battery takes a little more looking.clocklaw wrote:...next fluid change I will make sure to cycle through this, just need to locate that plug.

Re: First Gen ABS
Yes. It wouldn't be all that difficult. I think you could probably find a suitable pigtail from a Honda, Mitsubishi or other Japanese car at a salvage yard and just mount up a switch somewhere. The connector looked pretty standard from what I remember working on imports. However, there is nothing on an XS11 that fits... /wallionbeam wrote:The guy at the other sandbox had suggested connecting a remotely located switch to the ABS test coupler making it a cinch to periodically cycle the spool valves.raYzerman wrote:I actually have a similar issue going on.... just haven't got very deep into it yet.
