Food for thought - if I listed every gathering or event I've attended in the past few years(and it's not really a long list), the topic of "I need a tire to get home" has floated into the conversation more often then you'd think.

Wayne put new Pilot Road 4's on my wheels yesterday. They were not down to the wear bars yet (I wouldn't let Wayne take a pic of my old tires for the abuse I would get here), and I'm sure I could make SEO and back with no issues. Problem is life gets busy in the Spring/Summer, and this weekend was open and Wayne had the tire changer already locked down in his garage. Now, I do have all new respect for Ray and Billy. At tech days they jump up and down like they're 16 years old working on bikes. I changed out my tires and can barely walk today. I was surprised that with even being extra careful before I sat down on the floor, I always seemed to have one needed tool at the wrong end of the bike.

Nah. I draw the line on that shit. Plenty of takeoffs already with a nomar. I start long trips with fresh rubber and use the takeoffs on my local flower sniffing rides.

A tire in a shop on the road (Sunday afternoon 4 1/2 hours from the garage) costs as much as 2 1/2 sets of tires bought and put on in my garage. Had to experience that lesson twice for it to burn in. Now, I start every season on fresh sneakers. I will have very limited opportunities for 2 wheel adventures this spring and summer due to family and work obligations - so when I have time to ride, it will be spent riding - not doing the math on how many miles are on this set of tires and how many miles from the garage I am...

I rarely ride that far from home, that each day out and back is 100-300 miles. So if need be I can change a tire the night before.

Agree about the cost of buying a tire and paying a shop to mount. Worse yet, one is at the mercy of whatever they have in stock.

Funny coincidence: At present, I'm looking at my FJR tires, calculating anticipated mileage, and trying to decide if it's time to pay RECENTLY INFLATED prices for a set now or wait a couple months to see if an RS3 deal surfaces.

I’m interested in your impressions between the Yamaha touring (not the stock one) and your National cycle (same folks that manufacture the Yamaha touring) screen.

Did you get the 20308, or the 20309?

Installed my taller touring National Cycle windshield. I have been running the Sport/Tour windsheild which is about 3" shorter than the touring windshield but no wider. I am hoping for less buffeting.

I have a National Cycle N20308 (Sport Touring) and a N20309 (Touring) screens. I removed the shorter Sport Touring screen and replaced it with the taller Touring screen in hopes of reducing buffeting and noise.

After riding about 200 miles with the larger screen in 50 degree temps I am very pleased with the result. The first thing I noticed is the screen at it's lowest position is closer to my head. The next thing I noticed is I didn't have to raise the screen very much. Buffeting and noise was much less so this is a big win for me. I will keep the taller screen on the bike and see how it goes this summer when it gets hot.

At the windscreen's lowest setting the wind hits me about mid helmet so it was possible to use the upper helmet vents. I could not lower the screen enough to take advantage of the chin vent.

Geometry.

My FJR has a Russell Saddle and it is about 19-20 inches above the foot pegs. The seat is 27" lower than the top of the windscreen at the windscreen's lowest position. I am 6' 0" tall with a 32 inch inseam.

Obviously this set up isn't for everybody, depending on how the bike is set up, the person's height and inseam, climate and personal preferences.

Spare Gen2 forks, replaced the suspension fluid. The part #'s are the same, plan is to install them on my Gen3 '13 so I have 2 active fully adjustable forks instead of just 1.

for a period of time, I had 2 sets of wheels for my 2009. I did not have a tire changer, I was using a local shop that had reasonable rates for a carry in tire change ($20 per wheel). It allowed me to burn off tires commuting and still have a fresh set of tires at the ready for trips out of state. It was marvelous. Local shop gradually raised rates; at $45 per, I tapped out. That set of wheels went to an IBR rider and that sale funded many extended rides along with falling into a deal on a Cycle Hill changer (No-Mar sub-brand / model).

A 2nd set of wheels would be interesting. Easier to get ALL miles out of every tire that wey.

I need a rear wheel. Need a set, really.

Today, I installed new t-Rex armor on the rear. Spent an hour trying to install dual slimline PIAA horns. Terribly fiddly work. On top of that- second horn would never work. Redid the wires/crimps. Swapped leads. I mean, I’ve done this before….

Second horn was just bad from the factory. When I swapped in one of the three stock fjr horns I had laying around, it worked fine.

300 wonderful miles today under cloudless skies and perfect temperatures. Met a friend in the middle about 100 miles away. His fairly new (less than a year old) Suzuki GSXR1000GT is quite nice. We caught up over lunch and then shared some (s)miles together in the back country of Central Louisiana. Parted ways about 2:30 and I took the long way home. A terrific day.
