Turning your FJR in the garage...

Post by bungie4 »

My new place has a 2 car garage. Sweet!

Problem, it's got an older set of single panel garage doors and, the bottom edge has a 2x4 that sticks up a full 1.5 inches. No problem getting the bike in the garage, but a HUGE pain in the ass trying to get it out. For sure, I'm gonna drop my bike trying to get it over that board by hand.

A little googling turned up this:

Image

A steel turntable rated at 1000lbs. The best part, it sits all of 5/16" above the floor. A little further googling found that they are carried everywhere. Including Princess Auto in Canada. So after dinner I ran over and picked one up.

FOR 12 DOLLA!

Much more affordable that $300 for one of those fancy roll about ones.

Got it home, popped the FJR up on it, pressed down on the ass end of the bike and swung it around pretty as you please.

Awesome!

The turntable is 12" in diameter, and really will require a 1/8" plate on top of it to spread the load of the centerstand. Still, for less than $25 that's one kick ass tool!

WheatonFJR,

A 2"x4" board is about 4cm x 9cm.

Yeah, I ride motorcycles. I know why dogs put their heads out of the car windows.
Yeah, I fly hang gliders (3000 hrs.+). I know why the birds sing.

So, do they call 'em 4x9s up nort?
...and if so, why is Steve leaving 4x9s laying around?

EDIT: I still like the FJR turntable...that is a great garage idea.

I think I'm going to bolt a "4x9" to mine instead of a pl8. That way I can put it up on the "4x9" for tire changes and then rotate it if necessary.

Geez guys..

2x4's are that dimension when rough sawn. They get planed down for a final dimension of 1.5" x 3.5".

The culprit in my garage doesn't sit level and sits up probably 2" total. Riding over it is no big whoop. Pushing the bike backwards over it... well, I just KNOW I'm gonna end up dropping my bike doing it.

Clocklaw: Keep in mind the height of the turntable. The bike will be a real bitch to to put on the centerstand if it's much higher.

I usually put mine on a two stack of 2X4 blocks bringing it 3" off the floor, I usually put it on the stand and then work the blocks under it one at a time because it is a bitch to centerstand it that way. Maybe install a plate to distribute the load and then work the two blocks under it from there.

Have you ever seen the squids pull their bikes onto the kickstand and rotate it around? I've done it with lots of dirt bikes and sport bikes, but haven't tried it with the big gurl.

That was a nice find Bungie!

I do it with the TDM (on concrete, it digs a hole in asphalt) and used to do it all the time with the DR650 too.....but the FJR is just too heavy.

You got enough room in your garage to spin a bike around? Between the work bench, bicycles, and other various sundries I'm not sure this is gonna work for me. But I ordered one anyway... 'cause it's cool as hell. Now to stop off at the hardware store for a 1.8 diamond steel plate.
You are not paranoid if They are actually out to get you.

Ya, I had to move some shit.

But it sure beats the hell out of A: dropping my bike, or B: Asking Line to give me a push.
