Icy adventure and get off...
I woke up this morning around 0330 and it was 22°f. Now to you northern folk that's pretty warm, but in south Louisiana its a bit nippy. Knowing that it rained the night before as the temperature was dropping below freezing, I did my due diligence and checked road conditions. My route to work looked wide open. So I thought, "I'll be fine, I'll make a go at it and see how far I can get and just be careful". And yes I'm talking about riding the FJR. I get about 30 miles from my house to the first over pass to enter I-10 and no sooner did both tires touch the icy bridge my back tire decided that it wanted to be in front! So off we slide, first together and then we decided to part ways the FJR just wanted to be free.
As you all know I'm no stranger to get offs and I must say that this was indeed my most pleasant one I've experienced!
Sliding along an ICY road is like floating on a cloud. I didn't even feel the impact! Just sort of a, "welp here we are!"
That was the first thought I had. The second? "Wow! Look at the pretty sparks the FJR makes... must be my crashbars cause the bike is mostly aluminum..."
The third? "I don't want my feet to impact the curb... I better pick them up... you could really break an ankle that way, don't want that!" That's exactly what I did, so now I'm sliding down the road like a turtle and think... I really hope there's not a trooper or cop behind me... because there is no F'n way I'm going to be able to explain this... there's just no excuse for this sort of behavior.... oh... oh good I've stopped... that was 3? 4? Spins??? Ah we'll call it 3 and a half.
I look over and a truck was stopped behind me and I see a guy get out then I look and see the bike is much further across the bridge than I expected. I get to my feet and wave to the Gent coming to help "are you ok?" He yells. "Yeah I'm good!" I go take a step toward the bike and my foot slides whoa! I almost busted my ass... "glad that didn't happen! I'd hate to look like an idiot" I thought to myself.
I get to the bike shut it off as I'm slipping and sliding all around it. Two guys walk up "you sure you're ok" Yeah yeah I'm fine I just can't get my bike stood up on this ice. They help me up right my bike I slowly get it off the bridge. They as if I'm good and I yelled "do yall happen to see my phone up there?" They looked around and found it and we all went on our separate ways.
I pulled over at the next exit after thinking about it and came to the conclusion that I should just call in and that's exactly what I did.
Damage to the bike: Scrapped up crash bars an pucks.
Damage to me: Sprained wrist... so basically nothing.
No significant damage to my aerostich gear.
When I went to get my wrist checked out this afternoon I just told them that I slipped and fell on the ice ( which is true) no need to mention the motorcycle and cause unnecessary questioning and explanations that I clearly didn't have.

Re: Icy adventure and get off...
Here "Up North" in Dallas we are all too familiar with the rule of "Precipitation plus below freezing temps equals no ride." Ya'll "Down South" don't get to work out that formula very often I guess so we'll chalk it up to ignorance and not stupidity.
But yea, that was pretty stupid.
Glad you and the bike are going to be ok and you made it home fine. I give you this quote from my former boss when he found out I rode to work on a day with freezing rain. "Tomorrow come to work in a weather appropriate vehicle!"

Glad you're OK, Nate!! I don't even see a bruise on your ego. As for the crash bars, I'm assuming T-Rex..... fix the puck with a file and any scrapes on the bars.... clean well with alcohol and truck bed liner spray. Good as new (BTDT).
PS - which side? I'll check my stash for a spare puck.

When the temps go below freezing, stay inside, pour yourself a drink and make plans for the summer.

Aaaaaand 1 day out of a 1000 the bridges may be actually frozen... we pay attention to those signs just like everyone in here pays attention to those suggested speed signs on curvy roads!

Re: Icy adventure and get off...
Here in Dallas, we have those signs too. We also have signs that say "Drive Friendly." Both signs are very necessary here and both signs are equally ignored.natehawk750 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2024 6:46 pmAaaaaand 1 day out of a 1000 the bridges may be actually frozen... we pay attention to those signs just like everyone in here pays attention to those suggested speed signs on curvy roads!
