Wrong Oil Filter??

Wrong Oil Filter??
I ordered a couple oil filters for my '12, ordered part #5GH-13440-70 and what arrived was 5GH-13440-71. The box doesn't list the FJR but ends the list with "etc". Trying to avoid the hassle of returning them I looked for an hour and all I have found is the 71 filter fits Yamaha boat motors. What site am I not finding that has the full list? I did a search on this site for 5GH-13440 and only got one hit, Ray's oil filter comparisons. (Good re-read by the way!!) I'm confident it will fit, what I don't know if the filter itself will allow the needed flow rate or am I concerned about something that I shouldn't be? Thinking back to the other Yamaha filters I used I believe 5GH-13440 has been pretty consistent and the last two digits changed; With that the lower the number the shorter the filter, if I remember correctly....yes?? As I type this out I'm thinking the 5GH-13440 filter material is the same and the last number just says how long it is, other than that there is no difference.....correct??

I didn't see specific FJR fitment when I looked, but I found three references that suggest that it supersedes the 5GH-1340-70-00. One comment said that it was slightly longer.
Replaces Yamaha 5GH-13440-00-00, 5GH-13440-70-00
Supersedes 5GH-13440-70-00 which is discontinued.
OEM Yamaha Oil Filter 5GH-13440-71 REPLACES 5GH-13440-70
These were not an official Yamaha site, so who knows?...
(FWIW, Yamaha parts fiche says 5GH-13440-20-00 for FJR. I don't see anywhere that the -70 is a fit, but it might be just a longer filter.)

Your guess is as good as mine - I don't worry about it because I have never bought a Yamaha filter - usually use Mobil M1-110

What? Not the HF204?
The FJR oil filter is the most popular motorcycle and motorsport oil filter out there. Darn near everything uses the same thing, Goldwing, Kawasaki 5.5HP lawnmower engine, etc.

Use the filter...... Yammy has changed the part number at least 3 times due to manufacturer change and/or change in length. Newest are the shortest.... meh, I like long..... HF148 or M1-110, or if you want short, HF-204 or 303 or M1-108.

Point of fact, oil filters do not filter all of the oil all of the time. To do so would starve the engine of oil. They actually only filter a small percentage. That's what the diverter valve is for.

I don't think that is a universal given. Not all engines are plumbed that way. You describe a classic US automaker engine where only the excess pressure gets diverted to the oil filter.
I don't see a lubrication schematic in the 2016 FJR service manual. However the relief valve appears to vent to the oil sump, suggesting FJR oil does have a go at the oil filter every time around.

easily available on Amazon or your local Wally World. No need to worry about shipping or having to talk to the guy at the parts desk who can't find the AE in his parts fiche, or have some idiot sales guy tell you it's too hot out for a jacket.

Oh I've done a lot of searching and reading over the years on filters..... mostly I just like to disprove urban myths when somebody brings one up. Or ignore it, my choice.
Does anyone among us know the pumping capacity of the FJR oil pump, or any motorcycle oil pump for that matter.... how many gallons per minute at 70F, 100F or 200F. I can't find a spec....... I have seen filter tests on pumping equipment but an m/c oil pump spec hasn't surfaced yet.
I can tell you most engines have a pressure relief valve that bleeds off pressure at the oil pump and most are around 65 psi. I also know from back in the day 30 years ago, I had pressure gauges hooked up to a couple of motorcycles just to see what happened with cold vs. hot engine.... 60-80 psi when cold and 10-20 when hot, if that, very dependent on idle speed.
As for filtering, most good oil filters these days say they have 21 micron media and will flow 11 gpm but don't usually mention temperature.... those filters with bypass valves (all good filters have them) usually say they open at 10 psi, so, it would seem to me that bypass valve is wide open when oil is cold and potentially partially open when oil is hot.
I'm sure somebody can calculate how much flow goes through the bypass if we had some more information like size and opening, pressure when cold and hot, etc.
Hot is 100C for most specs telling you to measure the pressure, and they specify a given rpm... e.g., FJR should have 4.4 psi/1000 rpm when hot, so I take it to mean at 4000 rpm, that would be 17.6 psi, but I'll also tell you other bike manufacturers usually say double that. No matter, it's higher than the bypass valve 10 psi, or shall we say, very likely some oil is no longer being filtered, although the vast majority of it is.....
To complicate matters, if the filter media is partially loaded up, then there will be less flow allowed, and some may go via the bypass valve. Is the typical 11 gpm enough to prevent the need for the bypass valve to open?
Do you care? You shouldn't. The unfiltered oil has been clean at one point (new), and gone around enough times to have been pretty much fully filtered, so if some goes in bypass, it was likely filtered at some point. And your engine is going to last 100,000+ miles..........
