The Season begins / Millenium Falcon

Post by bungie4 »

So i finally got the bike out for the season. Got the lights mounted up, but not wired up, got some head scratching to do on that one. Notice my guard 'dog' aka: Queen of Derps that watches over my bike.

Looks good Bungie!!
However....and there is always a however....lights above the level of your headlights attract the policia in most, if not all parts of Canada! Out west the law is enforced in a relaxed manner, but since you have not taken my advice to move west and you live in the "center of the universe"...Ontario... be prepared! :D

And as to mentioning snowstorms....may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits!!

Didn't know that. The LED's are nearly level with the headlights and are running close to full dim unless I flip on the high beams, in which case the circuit triggers to full bright. Close enough that it should matter. The HID's are off 99.99% of the time. If cop does see them on, I have nothing to worry about, they'll go blind instantly and crash. Deer will burst into flames and Norad will get calls about UFO's.

Onto better news, I spent the day in the garage and got the both the HID's and LED's wired up. Things stopped popping fuses when I replace the Hella relay (strange one.. SPST double contact.. dual 87 terminals). I bought two and used the other for the LED's.

As for moving to BC. If anybody out that way needs a web programmer. Just call, I'll be there in 24 hours.

In BC, the regs would allow your current mounting setup, as long as you used only one pair of lights at any given time. Or you could possibly refer to one pair as running lights:
Daytime running lamps
4.08 A motor vehicle may be equipped with daytime running lamps, mounted on the
front of the vehicle at a height of not less than 30 cm and not more than 2.11 m,
that comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada)

Auxiliary driving lamps
4.09
(1)
A motor vehicle may be equipped with 2 auxiliary driving lamps, mounted on the
front of the vehicle at a height of not less than 40 cm and not more than 1.06 m,
that are capable of displaying only white light.
(2)
An auxiliary driving lamp must be directed so that the high intensity portion of
the beam is, at a distance of 8 m from the lamp, at least 12 cm below the height of
the lamp and, at a distance of 25 m from the lamp, not higher than 1.06 m from
the road surface.
(3)
An auxiliary driving lamp must operate so that it is illuminated only when the
upper beam of a multiple beam headlamp is illuminated

Fog lamps
4.11
(1)
A motor vehicle may be equipped with 2 fog lamps, mounted on the front of the
vehicle below the headlamps, that are capable of displaying only white or amber
light.
(2)
Each fog lamp must be
(a)
mounted not more than 30 cm below the headlamps, and
(b)
adjusted and aimed so that, at a distance of 8 m from the lamp, the centre
of the beam is at least 10 cm below the height of the fog lamp.
(3)
The fog lamp wiring and switch must permit simultaneous operation of the
parking lamps, tail lamps, licence plate lamp and, if required, clearance lamps.
(4)
The operator of a vehicle may use fog lamps instead of headlamps when
atmospheric conditions make the use of headlamps disadvantageous

With my current setup, the Ericas are mounted almost exactly at the upper limit, and I refer to the fork-mounted amber Glendas as running, rather than fog lights, so they are well within the parameters.

Not quite sure I believe that 100%. My Aux lights are above my headlights and they have been there since 2008. Never stopped!

but then I don't use my Aux lights for day lights. Only for that dark highway

Tom,

I'm pretty sure no cop is going to run the letter of law on our lights so long as were not being assholes with them.

I have heard of cops pulling over jacked up 4x4's with uncovered lights mounted on the roll bars. Covered, they are legal.

4.09 - Auxiliary driving lamps
(1) A motor vehicle may be equipped with 2 auxiliary driving lamps, mounted on
the front of the vehicle at a height of not less than 40 cm and not more than
1.06 m, that are capable of displaying only white light.
(2) An auxiliary driving lamp must be directed so that the high intensity portion of
the beam is, at a distance of 8 m from the lamp, at least 12 cm below the

1.06 m from the road surface.
(3) An auxiliary driving lamp must operate so that it is illuminated only when the
upper beam of a multiple beam headlamp is illuminated.

....and headlights are no more than 1.37 meters....
So, while I attempt to locate further regs. etc., how is your mounting so far? Further note ....."2 auxiliary driving lights etc"
Now this is for B.C. and not the Republic of Ontario soooooo....check YOUR regs!

As I originally stated, enforcement is relaxed and as you stated, if you are a jerk, expect enforcement. Seems reasonable.
I have only heard of one ticket issued in all my enforcement years and that was given to my brother! Chances are slim, but, Bungie, will you be the one?

Running out of time Bungie as I have to go be a cowboy for a couple of weeks to complete calving etc.
Alberta MC Act Section 42(1) and Sask MV Act Section 239 both state that auxiliary lights cannot be higher than headlights etc. Seems to be a pattern, but again, who will rat you out...

Mentioned previously:
Daytime running lamps
4.08 A motor vehicle may be equipped with daytime running lamps, mounted on the
front of the vehicle at a height of not less than 30 cm and not more than 2.11 m,
that comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada)
This is in BC, mind. As cowcop said, check your local regs.

If you can convince the LEO your auxiliaries are merely 'daytime running lamps', you MAY be let off. Even tho' my auxiliaries are at the legal height, I keep both sets on low during the day, and they are slaved to the high beam switch so they can go to dim with the low beam.

Looking at the other end of the thing, I have a license plate frame hyperlite setup: auxiliary tail/turn/brake (flashing for 5 seconds), which it probably technically illegal. Cop who pulled me over for a random check thought they were cool.

Sometimes theirs no telling what you'll get pulled over for. I've been pulled for reflective saddlebag stickers. Cop said they reflected white (which is technically illegal, amber or red only facing rearward). No ticket. The other time I got pulled for my Whelan police strobe taillight flasher. Which is most is ridiculously annoying. Cop just wanted a better look at it, said 'wished every bike had those installed'.

For those in the Centre of the Universe, who may be interested in what the Ontario Highway Traffic Act has to say:
Lamps required on motorcycles
(2) Subject to subsection (3), when on a highway at any time every motorcycle shall carry two lighted lamps in a conspicuous position, one on the front of the vehicle which shall display a white light only, and one on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (2).
(3) When on a highway at any time every motorcycle with a side car shall carry a lighted lamp in a conspicuous position on each side of the front of the vehicle which lamps shall display a white or amber light only and a lighted lamp on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (3).
Light requirement
(4) Any lamp required under subsection (1), (2) or (3) shall, when lighted, be clearly visible at a distance of at least 150 metres from the front or rear, as the case may be. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (4).
Strength of lamps
(6) Lamps on the front of a motor vehicle shall be so constructed, located, arranged and adjusted that when lighted as required by subsections (1), (2) and (3) they produce under normal atmospheric conditions and on a level road a driving light sufficient to render clearly discernible to the operator of the motor vehicle any person or vehicle on the highway within a distance of 110 metres ahead of the motor vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (6).

and in a supporting regulation:

Headlamps
2. (1) Subject to section 3, the headlamps on a motor vehicle shall be capable of projecting at least two beams, so controlled that only one beam can be selected for use by the driver of the motor vehicle at any one time according to the requirements of traffic. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 596, s. 2 (1).
(2) One beam shall be a lower or passing beam so aimed that none of the high intensity portion of the beam that is directed,
(a) to the left of the vehicle, is higher than 127 millimetres below; or
(b) to the right of the vehicle, is higher than,
the horizontal line through the centre of the headlamp from which it comes, at a distance of 7.6 metres ahead of the headlamp, when the vehicle is not loaded, and the high intensity portion of the lower or passing beam shall not rise higher than 1.07 metres above the level on which the vehicle stands at a distance of 22.9 metres ahead of the vehicle. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 596, s. 2 (2).

There doesn't seem to be anything in the Regs about the height that auxillary or driving lights can be mounted.
Cheers.
