What did you do to your FJR today?

I rode to work yesterday and noticed a weird new vibration that I could feel in the seat and the rear of the frame if I put my hand on it. I haven't had a chance to look the bike over yet. Any common causes for something like this?

Done any work on the bike recently?

Any wheel weights fall off? Is the vibration all the time, at certain speeds or RPMS? Was Wheatie near your bike recently? Need more data...

Not my FJR... buddy blew the trans in his 2015, seems a chunk of gear tooth got into the middle gear hypoid gears. Chipped and broke some more teeth as it turned. It forced one part of the middle gear to be pushed sideways (to accomodate the broken bits) and broke a ring of aluminum casting off the lower engine case.... fix unknown, so he obtained a replacement engine from an '08. Spent the day yesterday retrofitting it to be a Gen3.... I learned we had to swap cams (due to sensor ring needed for Gen3 cylinder identification sensor). The rest was routine, do a valve check with the "new" cams, remove cams to reshim everything uniformly, swap in Gen3 ignition pickup and trigger wheel, swap gear position indicator switch (different connector for Gen3)..... buddy will swap in a few engine covers that are a dark gray colour on the '08 vs. brighter silver on the '15.

I had previously swapped a 2014 engine into my 2006 project bike, did not have to swap cams since the '06 does not use the newer sensor ring on the cams.

It is unknown where this chunk of gear tooth came from, can't tell until the engine is further inspected/torn down. The gears are pretty chewed up... there's more to the story somehow.... he was accelerating hard to the point of the front wheel coming off the ground... anyway, never heard of this one before..... maybe don't be doin' wheelies!

Follow-up....... buddy was left to get the new engine installed, etc. and all wired up for sound..... got the call, code 012 showing on the dash, meaning, it's an active code. Bike cranks but no start. Tried everything over the phone, cleared codes, etc. and even checked the crankshaft position sensor (which is the ignition pickup), it all checks out. I have a very lightly used pickup, trigger wheel and cylinder identification sensor in my stash, so visited him today.... checked sensor again, put new one in, still same problem. In DiAG, no stored codes but d:62 said 12, but you can't clear it (because it's Active).

Had to pull throttle bodies twice in all this, connector is under there, and Yammy wire color codes can be funny sometimes.... we trace to a ground spider up front of the engine, then traced the other wire to the ECU... hmm, supposed to be Gray/white wire, but our trace was to the one next to it, a white/black wire..... hmmm. Confirmed at least we have no broken wires going to the ECU. Consulted wiring diagram again, can't 'splain it.... throttle bodies are in, but we re-routed wire so we wouldn't have to pull them again.... I put timing cover back on, don't seem to have enough wire to route it properly. I go to left side of bike and got sensor plugged in again, still 012 when you turn the ignition on. Then I spied another connection under the TB's, we had to pull the TB's again to get at the damned connector. Wait, this is the exact same connector, and unusual Yammy would put two of the same connector in close proximity (it not that obvious)...... well, damned if the one we were connected to was for the side stand switch, got them swapped, ignition ON, still shows 012 until I do a key off cycle, and 012 disappeared.

I guess Yammy was banking on somebody noticing the difference in wire length.... anyway, got airbox back on, fuel tank, pump runs, won't start due to lack of fuel, cycled pump again, cranked it until it sputtered to life and finally got enough fuel..... YAY!! That only took 3 hours. Pulled some of the excess wire down to the timing cover area to properly route it. Filled 'er up with coolant and ran the cycle. Runs good.....

So I left buddy to put all his plastic and miscellaneous pieces back on while I headed home the 1.5 hrs drive (I was paid well). Oddly enough, he goes golfing at the golf club just a few miles from me, so told him it's his turn to visit.

225 miles of North Georgia twisties. I have ZERO chicken strips, far less peg feelers, and those B023s will NEVER see 3500 miles at the rate they are going.

Good thing I brought a set of RS3s with me!

I know 97k on an FJR isn't anything special; it's special to me because on the 2 FJR's before this one, they've ended up in the dumpster much "younger" than this...

Edit to add - this ride was made possible because D.Eagle shamed me into blowing off the 10,000 things on my household "to-do" list to go riding.

I needed that, his text / phone call couldn't have been at a better time; I was sitting in the garage with a cup of coffee deciding if I was going to mow lawn, trim the bushes on the side of the house, or get the truck washed. Another few minutes and I'd been knee deep in the responsible things. Instead, I got to put about 160 miles on the bike and remembered what "snappy acceleration" is. I didn't realize how spoiled I was with the GTI; now that it's gone, the FJR is my "snappy" fix... And she's Snappy as F%$K!!

Oh, and we definitely didn't get passed by a ford escape doing 90 either...

The heavier duty Gen2 peg feelers screw right into the Gen3 pegs. I did it on my '13 when I wore down the wimpy ones. I used blue Locktight.

I used to work summers for an insurance fraud company. Mainly trying to catch some of the thousands of workers comp cheaters. I was essentially the chase car. I had a white Honda civic. Just about as benign a car as you can have. The guy I worked for was my best friends dad(retired state trooper). He had the really expensive camera and the blacked out van.

I was young and no one would suspect me for a cop or any type of investigator. It was a great gig…… I got to drive fast, ignore the traffic rules since I had a trooper backing me if caught, and it was all cash

We were sitting on a “disabled” guy who left his house around dinner time in a hurry. In his haste he “forgot” his walker and leg braces. He went to Monical’s pizza. He had gone in there by himself. As I am waiting on the boss to get in position I see a hottie go into the pizza place in a tiny yellow sun dress. A storm was blowing in and that dress was whipping around big time. With both of her hands free I still catch a peek of the tiny striped undies.

I guided my boss over the radio into the parking lot for a good angle to see the guy as he comes out. I told him I thought he could come out carrying a couple pizzas. He needed to get his camera ready.

His pizzas must’ve not been done because tiny sun dress comes out first and with both hands on 2 pizzas, she can’t hold that dress down one iota. It was a full on Marilyn Monroe moment.

Our guy eventually comes out and he is carrying at least 3 pizzas and a couple bags. We got this dude dead. He hops in the car and drives away. I follow at a safe distance keeping the boss apprised over the radio as to his location. I don’t hear anything back from the boss and wonder if his battery died due to all the electronics in the van.

About 10 min later the boss gets on the radio and asks for a location. “Subject at home” is my response. I ask him what he was doing. Apparently he couldn’t turn in a tape with miss underpants/sundress to the insurance company.

I still recall that very vividly. Lol. Back to your boring stories.

I replaced the flat rear tire with a hole in it with a new Roadsmart 3. Now I'm ready to meet Festus down on the newly paved Rt 33 in West Virginia.

Not mine... put together buddy's '16 with missing parts, new oil pump chain and sprocket, clutch all reinstalled and water pump. Did valve check, 1 intakes at minimum, the rest mostly at nominal. Had another job, so she'll get buttoned up later........

Had to re-do the valve shimming on the intakes..... bike's been sitting a while, so I suspect a coupla valves stuck.... drenched them with oil, then spun the engine over several times with the starter... rechecked, reshimmed, all good now. Got the bike buttoned up and then Tuesday loaded it on the trailer for the 3 hour trip up north.... dropped it off and stayed overnight, came back home today, and another bike jumped into my trailer......
