Josh's to Plainview IN, back to Josh's and on to Minneapolis

Post by bigjohnsd »

When my mother passed in 2012 she willed her body to Stanford University Medical School. When they finish with a cadaver they cremate the body and will return it to the family if desired. She had no desire for a big to do when she passed and the plastic box with her cremains sat on my closet shelf since 2014. I couldn't get coordinated with my brother, I had planned to scatter the cremains at the family plot in Plainview IN on my way to the South East Ohio shindig but forgot to load them before I left home.

When Pterodactyl called about spending last Thursday night at my place I told him that I would be happy to accompany him to his Iowa side car rally and then go with him as far as Josh's.

It all worked out, the Gray Ghost was repaired on Friday, I met Pterodactyl in Estherville IA on Saturday, we had a great Mexican dinner, and a cool but windy ride to Josh's on Sunday.

Josh did his usual, killed a cow and grilled it (the steaks didn't last long enough to get a picture, the man can grill!

This morning we mounted up and left Josh's at 0715. I headed to the Wells Family Cemetery near Plainview IN, about 120 miles and a two hour ride. Pterodactyl went to visit his family in Lafayette IN,

The last, and only other time I was at this cemetery was in about 2005, it was surrounded by a corn field then, easier to find in the bean field this year. I had marked the place in Google Maps back in 2005, the Lat & Long worked just fine in my Garmin XT

What has always amazed me is my Grandfather and Grandmother. I never met my Grandfather but I'm certain he had some stories to tell.

You do the math! My mother was born in 1922 when Grandad was 69, her younger brother, my Uncle, was born in 1926 when Grandad was 73. Who said 60 is the new 40?
Grandad was ahead of his time.

Once finished in Plainview I headed back to Josh's to meet him for lunch. We had some great Grossburgers at a place called Grossburgers in Danville IL before I headed to my sons in Minneapolis.

A long but satisfying day. Tomorrow I get to spend with my grandkids!

Today's ride:

My mother is into the ancestry thing and I'm honored and blessed to have a booklet she wrote that tells our story (as much as she knows). In my mental preparedness, when the house catches fire, that booklet is one of the things I hope to grab on the way out....

Well done, John.
