Black version of Chrome Sidecase Trim

Post by BeardBarreBokeh »

Perhaps some of you folks can point me in the right direction.

I've seen editions of the current gen FJR with black side-case trim instead of chrome...ultimate editions, maybe? I've looked on Partzilla at every variation I can find to try and find these mythical trim pieces, but everything I find is chromed.

My personal taste is for black and, to date, I've either plasti-dipped, spray canned, or truck bed lined these pieces but the finish eventually flakes/peels and I hate it. I'd much rather buy the black trim pieces.

Anyone have a suggestion on where I could look or, maybe (as my wife is wont to tell me) I've been overlooking something right in front of my face.

TIA

Look at Gen2 parts, 2012 and earlier. They're black. You can even get they logo emblem separately.

Silly question perhaps...have side cases changed at all between gens? Will Gen 2 stuff fit on my 2021?

Perhaps try a wrap? Carbon fiber wrap has held up well on mine. Perhaps try a black wrap?

Wrapping is a good shout...I wrap quite a bit on various projects so I'm not sure why I didn't think about it for this.

Follow up question then, I guess...are the entire trim pieces held on with adhesive or do I disassemble the shell to unscrew them? There are a couple version of the piece on Partzilla...one looks like it's taped on and the other is screwed in.

I don’t know about the current Gen, but on my ‘09 they’re affixed with adhesive.

Gen III, 2013+ they are attached by two nuts on the inside of the case. Easy-peasy to remove them.

On the chrome version, the Yamaha decal will peel right off. Many have lost them (mostly right side) because it's some kind of adhesive that doesn't stand up to the heat when bike on side stand facing the sun. Remove and glue them back on with some RTV....

I actually removed mine already and replaced them with some custom cut vinyl instead. Good looking out, though!

This was the route I took. The blacked out look went better on the A$$Fault Gray 2015. I haven't lost a single Yamaha sticker since I went to the Gen1/Gen2 rubber strip. Before I was like a Harley Davidson going down the highway. Random chrome pieces falling off...
