Where can I buy a 2005 service manual?

Post by silverback »

Ebay turns up a bunch of pirated junk .pdfs on cd. I can't seem to find any online retailers either. Anyone have any clues?

Thanks.

Hey Silverback....is yours the ABS or non-ABS bike? I have two factory service manuals but only one ABS addendum.

Mine is an ABS bike.

I am starting to gather that the 05 manual is out of print, but the 04 will work with the ABS addendum. I have the 07 manual, and I wonder if the pin outs for the ECU are the same.

No, they are not the same, but the difference is small and mostly related to the ABS and signaling lights.

The '04 and '05 are essentially identical except for color so either year FSM with ABS included or as an addendum will work. My '04 has two manuals, the main bike and the ABS supplement.

There are some OEM Gen I service manuals on eBay right now. Anything less than $93 is below Yamaha prices. Dunno why but some OEM manuals are white, some blue/white and some color. At the Yamaha USA web site, in their manual store shows the '05 manual as in stock and available.

If you're still looking for that cruise signal wire, there is only one grey/red which should be right beside the orange one. I'd look but my bike isn't available at the moment.
Keep yer stick on the ice........... (Red Green)
Duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can sure muffle the sound.

As mentioned in another thread the coil wire colors are the same between the Gens and the coil wire colors are unique. Almost all the wire colors are unique to the item or system and consistent between Gen I and Gen II if the items were not modified like the ABS and to some extent the signaling wires.

If you are still fishing for the <angel harps> ABS </harps> ;) wire I can check my ABS manual tonight.

The only place for authorized manuals is through Yamaha and it's dealers. You can pick up used ones (like above). There are also digital and even a print version that are out there at seriously reduced rates but those have been confirmed as being bootlegs. Yamaha has yet to sell a digital version to consumers. I think they're missing a great opportunity.

In comparison though, Subaru sells their service manual digitally but each section of the manual is an individual download which is charged for separately or you buy a 24 hour subscription to their digital services and binge download it all as quickly as you can (it's limited by their throughput) before the subscription runs out. At its cheapest, it's about 3 times more than the paper manual for the FJR from Yamaha. Searching the Subie digital stuff is hard because you have to first guess which section your project is part of and, if you search in the wrong section, guess again and go searching in another file.

It's after work, I'm home with my Gen I ABS FSM open in front of me.......

And, the answer is -- the Gen I ABS ECU does not talk to the ECU, at all. You are stuck with tapping a coil signal. The ABS ECU does monitor some things like the brake lights but it is nearly a 100% self contained system. This is significantly different from the Gen II. The ABS ECU does connect to the Meter Assembly to drive the ABS warning light on one wire and pick up ground on another wire.

One intrepid FJR owner from the dark ages used a TTL IC (a ripple counter) to divide down the Gen I VSS signal to a point where the AVCC could use the frequency. It's actually pretty easy, but adds another layer of 'something else to go wrong'.

Interesting. I still would like to have a service manual for my bike. I am not opposed to paying for it. My local stealer is opposed to selling manuals for fear of losing business. I let them change a tire for me once...that's enough.
So, I looked up the part number and kept seeing "discontinued" on typical google places. Maybe its worth a call to some surrounding area dealers.

Rostra sells pre made signal dividers. I also have a pretty good standing with some of the EEs at work who would probably make one for me if I asked.

I don't think the Rostra will trigger speed from the coils IIRC.

I was able to look up and find the part number through that website, then find a proper used manual via ebay matching the part number, although it was advertised for an 04.

Another step in the right direction.

Well, its not electronic, so I don't imagine it is. The greasy fingerprints are authentic if nothing else.

Within the past couple of weeks I got confirmation from a source of paper manuals that they were NOT authorized by Yamaha. It surprised me since I thought them cost-prohibitive to recreate, sell for a significant discount, and still make enough money to justify the effort.

I simply sent him an e-mail and asked him very plainly. His total response to if they were authorized? "Negative"

Getting a used one for a discount is a long tradition on the forums.

Well, according to the seller, all accounts of examination and as best I can tell, this one is a used Yamaha manual. If it is a pirate copy, those are some damn talented pirates and they should get into counterfeiting something more lucrative than service manuals on eBay.
