Re: A Whole New Backyard
I may have accidently led a group of FJR riders on a meandering ride near the Illinois River west of Starved Rock, when I took the wrong road and got to the end of it as it got rougher. I saw a road/goat path to the left up a steep hill and took it. Some followed. Some didn't. Didn't seem like no thing to me. I've never been a dirt bike rider, but it didn't seem hard. I heard that some people wussed out for some reason on the way up on their pretty FJR (2-up)...and stopped. I have no idea why they did that but they regretted that, and regretted following me. Let this be a warning to ya...

Nothing to it, unless the gravel is loose. In this picture I'm coming back from over a mile of dirt and gravel. Was returning from a candidate home site is 4000' off paved road. Rather than build a 4000' road I'm probably going to build off to the right of this picture.
Have also driven the Tesla on this "road".

Congrats on the new toy! You have probably rode every paved one in your area 100 times or more. This will open things up.
Went to see my cousins property on the Suwannee river. Told him we were on the bikes. He mentioned the last 3 miles. Were dirt. Luckily that county has lots of dirt roads and maintains them well. Tina didn't even fuss and she generally hates dirt.
His dirt roads are better than some of the pavement in my neighborhood.

Hard packed, with loose crap on top, and nasty washboard.
Would really like to hit that one on a DS one day.

Very nice pants. May I add one more rule that you may or may not ever need. #3 Snow? turn around now! Trust me on this one bud, I have broken this rule a few times too many...it hurt.

It's too deep, this is a bike not a canoe.

Re: A Whole New Backyard
I'm smiling, I've had both my FJR's (with other FJR's following, the fools) on goat trails that even goats wouldn't go on... not necessarily by choice and sometimes longer distances than I wanted. Thankfully no mud. One secret, no death grip on the handlebars.

Well, the information can't hurt. But thinking out loud, if there ever comes a day down here where SNOW is a dual sport consideration, then I've got a lot more to worry about than motorcycling...
