You know the FJR does not have a “diff”?
I also bet you knew what he meant, right?
He has a rare triked FJR?
I don’t know as much as you and I knew what he meant.

Packed it for EOM. Then got up 2 hours early for work so I can get on the road 2 hours earlier.
Left the Bazooka at home as after reading the "Shooters out there" thread we should be well covered in the hotel parking lot.
Actually, with bringing the wife there isn't much room left anyway. And that's way on me overpacking than her.

Let's see, pinion gear, check, ring gear, check. Converts horizontal rotation of driveshaft to vertical rotation of the rear wheel, check. Takes hypoid gear oil, check. JSNS
Allows two driven wheels to turn at DIFFerent speeds. Check? :D

Wouldn't have been much of a trip if the wheel bearings scrambled in the middle of it.

Yup. 3 input/outputs while the FJR only has 2 where 1 always turns at a fixed ratio to the other.

The 3 in/out is also known as a Power Split Device. Toyota uses one in their hybrids and calls it an eCVT. Engine on one, wheels with a big electric motor on another, and a smaller electric motor on the 3rd. By controlling the speed on the smaller motor they can get the engine to spin at any RPM desired for any given road speed. Sometimes the little motor is a generator, sometimes it is a drive motor. Is used to start the engine. Brilliant, simple, and elegant, yet enormously complex requiring software to implement.

(yesterday)

Washed 4600 miles of road splooge off it. Somewhere between my last stop and the 225 miles to my house, my left rider's foot peg rubber cover fell off!! Ordered a new one with the bolts, along with a set of spark plugs, oil filter, and some Yamalube.

Guess this weekend, I'll give the ole girl some wrenching love....

The screws you get will likely be JIS head. They suck! Experience talking here, do yourself a favor and swap them matching Allen head screws. If ever you replace the cover again you'll be cussing long & loud at the stripped out JIS slots. And blue locktight- word.
