The Truncated Trifecta - A [s]three plus[/s] two week Odyssey throughout the West
I'm headed out on a three plus week adventure on Tuesday.
Tuesday morning we (AbercrombieFJR and I) will leave Spearfish and head South down through the Rockies to Alamosa CO, we will camp somewhere in Northern Colorado Tuesday night and arrive in Alamosa on Wednesday evening after touring the Rockies.
Skip (ZZZipp) will meet us in Alamos at my riding buddy Kid's.
On Thursday we (all four) will ride North and then up over Independence Pass and on to Glenwood Springs CO for the weekend NAFO 2021 (National FJR Owners Meeting) event.
While in Glenwood Springs we will ride 2-300 miles each day seeing the sights etc.
On Sunday Aug 29th Skip and Abercrombie will head to their respective homes while my friend Kip and I will leave Glenwood Springs and work our way West to YFO just South of Bridgeport CA for Labor Day weekend. We plan on staying up as high as we can before making an early morning blast across US 50 or US 6 on Wednesday, then riding South to Bridgeport CA trying to avoid any fires en route. We will be at the Virginia Settlement Thursday- Sunday AM for a really special event put on by a really great lady. While here we will ride as many Sierra passes as we can certainly Sonora, Luther, Ebbetts, Carson, Tioga (if we can get a Yosemite Transit permit), Kingsbury Grade, and maybe others, we will try to visit the ghost town of Bodie while we are there.
On Sunday we plan on leaving the Settlement and heading South down US 395 before turning West and riding over the Sherman Pass. I think I've ridden over all of the Sierra Nevada passes but the Sherman Pass, I want to check that box.
We will probably camp up high Sunday night before blasting across the San Joaquin Valley en route to the coast at Morro Bay on Monday, and up the coast on CA 1 to San Francisco on Tuesday. A kind friend has offered us dinner and a place to lay our heads in San Francisco on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday morning my Kip heads back to Alamosa CO while I continue up the Coast as far as Oregon. I hope to visit the Lost Coast before cutting over to La Pine OR (just North of Crater Lake) arriving on Thursday evening. La Pine is the location of the "Tenth Annual Reuben Run". You can get just about the best Reuben sandwich in the world at "The Depot" in La Pine, just ask the 50 some motorcyclists that will show up this weekend to eat one or two.
After riding central Oregon, I'll leave La Pine on Sunday and take a couple of days to get to Pterodactyl's in Helena, MT.
After a day or two in Helena, I'll head towards Spearfish. I haven't ridden the "Highline" on my bike, it adds a few miles but if the weather isn't too hot or too wet, one can only hope for some rain up there in Northern Montana, I might just do it. I'll be looking for some friends hunting sharp tail grouse and Hungarian partridges along the Highline, maybe we will share a few lies and a beer or two one evening.
Here are the planned routes, all good until the first stop sign or the first interesting looking road along the way, can you spell "serendipitous"? Gravel is part of the adventure but Google Maps doesn't like to show or do gravel. we have a fair bit on our schedule.

Looks like about 5,100 miles of "Travel" and I figure another 1,400 miles of "Recreational Riding" at the three events. Should just about burn up another set of tires and about 135 gallons of Premium. Glad to try and meet any inmates along the way for a beer or a coffee.
The first update will be from Alamosa next Wednesday night.

BigjohnSD and Abercrombie are all settled in with a full belly from a nice little bar / restaurant across the street from a great little campground in Encampment WY. Tomorrow we are off to pick up Kip and Skip in Alamosa CO and Thursday we'll back track to North Glenwood Springs.

Re: The Trifecta - A three plus week Odyssey throughout the West/Pacific North West
Trifecta Days One through Five.
It has been a great trip - 1504 miles so far.
Day One - Spearfish to Encampment WY
Relive Video - https://www.relive.cc/view/vYvE5KRwWGv
After a 1000 arrival by AbercrombieFJR from Fargo (hereafter Kevin) we installed his new Cardo Packtalk Bold headset, paired up and departed Spearfish about noon headed down Spearfish Canyon. We weren't far down the Canyon when Kevin remarked "I can feel the stress leaving"!
No matter what I did this was my view all day -
We meandered our way across Wyoming
before stopping in Medicine Bow for a cold drink and to check out the old photos on the walls of the Virginian Hotel - if only these walls could speak.
We made it as far as Encampment WY where we camped for the night.
We had a great supper at the Bear Trap bar/cafe across from the Lazy Acres campground.
Day Two - we were up and on the road after a quick energy bar and coffee breakfast. We took a scenic route down through the Rockies designed to get us to my friend and co-rider Kip's at
4:00PM.
US 40 East of Rabbit Ears Pass
Another cohort, Skip, arrived from Missouri just minutes ahead of us. He was glad for the air conditioning and comfortable seat in his Jeep trailering across Kansas!
Days one and two
Day Three - Alamosa to Glenwood Springs "NAFO"
Relive Video. https://www.relive.cc/view/vWqBrP5YBQq
Helping our fellow NAFO attendees in a moment of need.
Day Four - a long ride to Mount Evans via a circuitous route!
Some dumb ass forgot to start the Relive video until atop Mount Evans.
https://www.relive.cc/view/vxOQYj8Q4MO
A Climax along the way.
We rode over 400 miles on Friday, too far....
Day Five - an easy day along the Colorado River
A recurring theme seems to be creeping into this report/trip!

Skip
Tomorrow Skip heads home,
Kevin heads home,
Kip and I head towards YFO at The Virginia Settlement just North of Mono Lake on US 395 in California.

Trifecta-2021 Day Five -
Kip and I departed the NAFO site at 0830 and took a circuitous and scenic route to Payson UT.
https://www.relive.cc/view/vAOZzwWp2yO
Day Six Relive Video above.
We found a, in the words of @festar "New Favorite Road" as shown on our trusty Butler Map, "CO 5" cuts the corner from CO 13 to CO 64 intersecting just East of Rangley CO. After a boring run across what seemed like half of Utah on US40 we really enjoyed our spirited sprint down US 191 to intersect US 6.
Today's travels-
Arriving at our humble Quality Inn Payson UT, just a stones throw from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC we did laundry, soaked in the hot tub, ate Wendy's salads for dinner and are now about to crash.
A tad over 1850 miles since Tuesday morning, on a three week pace!
:
Tomorrow after getting Kip's front tire renewed we will head South down through the Wasatch, possibly to Brian's Head. No firm destination in mind, we just want to be high and kool!

Day Seven - Joe's Valley to Panguitch UT
https://www.relive.cc/view/vMv8yG97gPO
Yesterday (Day Six) we started by putting a new Front tire on Kip Walker 's bike, then we rode the Mt Nebo Road, avoiding tickets with the Radar Detector just after we started. After the Mount Nebo Road we rode the Energy Loop before taking Skyline Drive - a gravel byway South from US 6. We ended our day camped at Joe's Valley Reservoir.
This morning (Day Seven) among brief showers we headed South to Torrey UT where we ate our lunch. We paid homage to the Brian Maddy memorial intersection on the loop around Fish Lake. Ask him about it, there is a story there. After We then rode UT 12 South to Bryce Canyon, picking up two FJRs and an S10 along the way. All five of us, Myself, Kip Walker, FJRtist, Panman and Fontanaman are ensconced at the Days Inn Panguitch UT after a great dinner and a few beverages. Tomorrow we set forth for Ely Nevada via Great Basin National Park.

Re: The Trifecta - A three plus week Odyssey throughout the West/Pacific North West
Last night featured a good Porter.
We woke up to a steady rain, decided to hang until 0900,
then set forth in our rain gear.
Rained steadily until we gassed up in Minersville. Then conditions improved.
Stopped in Baker NV at the entrance to the Great Basin National Park, hoped for sustenance, but both restaurants were closed so some removed rain gear and all had a snack.
We rode up to the Lehman Caves visitor center.
We then rode up the 16 mile Wheeler Scenic Byway

We are in Ely NV now, early departure for YFO in the morning.
