The nipples are way more important than one might have thought.

While I am not usually one to have this problem, but attention to the nipples by many lesser men has often led to problems getting her motor running right.

I am off to the auto parts store to rectify the situation.

Anyone notice something missing?

Yahtzee!

open pair ports broadcasting internal engine sounds to the outside. See, that wasn't so hard, was it... :)

Waiting in the line at AutoZone. Buying plugs/covers/nipples, hose or whatever they have.

We shall see what they have here. If not, I will go over to the Rural King here.

Yes, I saw the dry rotted ones and got them taken care of. Auto Zone did not have more than 2 sets. Fired it up and 100% fixed. Will ride it tomorrow to school just because I can.

Went for a ride tonight just to test everything out. $10.88 for that fix.

All of you were right in saying it could not be something catastrophic given the dead nuts reliably of these engines.

Overall, when I recall back to when we removed the pair system at tech day in Owasso 2 years ago, we had to cut some corners. The local places did not have the proper covers that we looked for. We went with the pictured caps and they had to be heated and stretched to fit. They were all that was available. Ray and Billy prob told me to replace them with something more robust, but obviously I forgot and didn’t.

Thanks again for everyone’s help and as a public derived announcement, next time you have a look under the tank, check your nipples for dry rot.

As others have found, nipples are not made all the same and can deteriorate after a couple of years... Better if you can get silicone nipples...
https://www.stockcap.com/silicone-caps.html

The proper fix for this is PAIR block-off plates, best done at valve check time. WynPro hasn't made any for a while, but you can get others....... the downside is no rubbers and no nipples.

Driven Racing makes a set.... shop around ebay or Revzilla ~$48

Note for the 2016-up guys, you cannot remove the solenoid without throwing an error code..... must leave solenoid connected (or find a suitable resistor?).

I knew this finding would result and degrade into childish, juvenile, immature discussion...... and I am okay with that.

I rode the FJR to school today. It ran as normal. I am thankful and relieved this is all it was. I really did not want to trailer to a tech day or ask a dealer to try and fix. The worst part was trying to rationalize a reason the wife would accept as to the reason I needed a new FJR.

I guess no one should be surprised that there was some "sub standard" nipples in Owosso.

I may be looking for a mechanical fastener of some type to cinch down the caps.

Do you find it odd that the two middle caps blew off?- More pressure in those as opposed to the outer ones? Maybe an accelerated deterioration since the heat build up could be more in the middle of the engine.

They just got old and loose.... the airflow is normally drawn into the ports naturally by exhaust flowing out the exhaust ports, and there are reed valves to prevent backflow... should not have "blown" off, but who knows a pulse from a reed valve... they were too loose, fell off with the slightest of ease.

Sux to be you to miss this Owosso Tech Day........

So what can we learn from all of this?

(my opinion)

1. Removing the PAIR is pointless and potentially detrimental. "Cleaning the area up" under that gas tank is useless - the roaches don't care what it looks like.

2. A pair of hard and rotten nipples can give even the best of men a good bit of grief.

That is all....
