What did you do to your FJR today?

Had a nice little RTE with my brother in law (Harley Guy) about 155 miles. Went to the same place we went to last time (no gravel road this time). So we pull up and he is off the bike and headed for the door while I was futzing around with something before you know it he's back and laughing said they're not even open. So we head back to a little diner we passed on the way. I had a cheeseburger with jalapenos and fries. When I got home and parked the bike I see some stains on the ground I hadn't noticed before so I check the forks and sure enough a bit of oil weeping. So out comes my trusty homemade seal mate. I do the deal and clean everything, give a few good pushes on the bars and repeat just incase. Check again and seems to be ok. I'll have to wait till the my next ride to see if everything is okay.

I did that 3-4 times over the past year. Never got to the point where it dripped on the garage floor but forks and brake calipers were frequently wet with fork oil. Seal-mate worked for a while but these seals probably had 85,000 miles on them. Finally bit the bullet and did new seals and bushings this past spring. (Once I cleaned them up, the brakes worked way better!) Probably should have sent the innards back to Traxxion (AK20) but would have been without for a couple weeks. Next time...

Steering bearing re-torque today. A previous owner had installed tapered bearings but didn't keep it long enough after to warrant doing it.

What torque spec did you use? No issues with my OEM bearings but if they had to be replaced, I would probably go with the tapered. (Never replaced them on the '07 sold with 185,000 miles - still not notchy, loose or rough)

I find the tapered bearings are relatively insensitive to preload. Just take out the slack and a bit more. Yamaha’s procedure us quite satisfactory.

I found on my '07 with the wobble, tapered bearings seem to work better with a touch higher torque than the OE ones do. OE is 37/13. I torqued the tapered ones to 45/20.

Also, since I had to remove the top plate, I raised the tank while the handle bars were still out of the way and replaced the spark plugs & throttle body rubber caps.

Installed another reflector below the license plate. Put new real-time reflectives on the back of the bags, incorporating a reflective American flag on one side

Inspected the rear tire, and decided it can wait until Saturday to be replaced.

I just checked with my doctor. It’s been around 38,000 miles since my valve check. Intakes ranged from .18-.20, exhaust from .20-.23. Trying to decide if I’m having it done again this fall, or not. Probably will.

Have sadly noticed how hard it is to buy good American flag decals. I have a small one on my rear fender which needs to be replaced. Fortunately I have extra from 5 years ago but you can’t find a decent flag decal at formerly American Walmart, now the local CCP bureau.

Picked up the last gasket for my valve check this sat. Looking forward to EOM.

Swapped on a new PR4GT rear. When putting everything back together, the lower brake caliper bolt pulled the threads, all of them, out of the caliper mount, as pretty as you please. There was never any resistance at all.

Seems stable. I’ll have to keep an eye on it until
I can get a replacement mount, and a couple of bolts for good measure.
