Used FJR prices

Post by Toter »

Geez, visited a couple of dealers today looking at dirt bikes for my son and grandson. Each dealer had a used FJR, one a 2019, and one a 2020. Each was priced at $600 over MSRP! Friggin nuts! For a Yamaha TTR-50 priced at $1,699, the OTD price was over $2,800!! Glad I have my toys, as this is not the time to buy them.
I spent most of my money on guns, motorcycles, women, and whiskey. The rest I just wasted!

Found a used 2020 Yamaha TTR-50 in Atlanta area. Son is working on it. Dealer said freight was $650, doc fees $225. No negotiating. You don't buy it, next guy will. Finding them is like looking for lizard fur.

I'm holding off restocking the toy box anytime soon, prices are just too silly now!

Dealer in Decatur AL has new 2018 A for $14,500 OTD.

Oh, and it has had the transmission recall performed.

So on a $1700 (off-road) bike, there's another $1100 in tax, prep, documentation - aka dealer fees on top?? Wow.

Who knew that they did as much work at the dealer on the bike as the people that built it, the ocean shippers that shipped it, the dockworkers, and the over the road drivers that got it to the dealer's doorstep!

Plus, locally some dealers charge for their advertising costs of the bike as well as all other fees, real or imagined.

On business trips to California I took time to be a tourist at Malcolm Smith Motorsports and Chaparral. A KTM I could buy at home for $8,000 OTD was $10,800 after dealer prep and taxes. Don't know where Toter lives but it sounds like California.

My favorite independent dealer sells Beta (dirtbikes), and Country Clipper and Exmark zero-turn mowers. Sold his last allocated 2021 Beta in April. That doesn't mean he won't get more, he just can't count on it. Has tried to order a trailer load of mowers (to get shipping discount) but they only sent 4 units. He was thankful to get those, and thankful they honored the bulk order shipping rate as shipping can add hundreds to his cost.

Our rule was "Deal on anything we can easily replace in inventory", "Hold the line on anything scarce" we charged Freight, Setup and a Doc Fee, yes it went to the bottom line, yes we stayed in business, no we weren't the cheapest but we were there when you needed us.

Profit at MSRP on a TTR-50 is about $200. You can;t keep the doors open on that margin, especially when supplies are limited.

Sorry, but $1,000 in additional fees on a $1,699 bike is ridiculous, and gouging in my opinion. So is $600 over new MSRP on a 2 year old FJR. Hope they sit on both for a year. Not spending any of my cash there. Hopefully their customers remember this gouging when their floors finally restock.

"Gouging" is what sore losers cry when something becomes precious and they missed out when it was a bargain.

You are not entitled to the TTR-50. The dealer is just as entitled to set his own price as you might to sell yours.

If you don't think $1100additional fees on a $1700bike is gouging, I want to line up to be your salesman! JSNS!

You don't understand. While I respect the seller's right to set any price the seller has to respect my right to walk away. If you can not walk away from a deal then whatever price demanded is fair. Dealer thinks someone will pay so he is free to try. Free to drive away future customers. Free to tempt someone else to enter his market with competition.

If you can get a TTR-50 elsewhere for the price you want, then knock yourself out!

A Yamaha dealer 70 miles away charged a friend $300 to mount+balance carry-in tires on his FJR. Friend is kicking himself for not confirming price in advance. Has also put an end to over $30,000 of purchases with that dealer in recent decades.

Oh, I understand all right.

I just don't think you and I agree on the definition of gouging. :D

You can f@$k everyone once - one business model that works for a little while,
or,
You can treat folks right and stay in business forever, treating them right doesn't mean giving away your product but it does mean not bending them over every time they come in the door. Standing behind what you sell is important even when the manufacturer doesn't stand behind you.

My personal opinion is that the TTR is way overpriced.
