Feeling your pain N4HHE. Hopefully the work will get done soon and done right. I got 1700 miles on my FJR since the tranny work was done. No problems. Runs good and shifts well.

A group I ride with is headed to Gatlinburg in April. Felt I had no option but to cancel as even if it got done soon I’d like to have it a week before heading out on a 700+ mile venture.

You need to call and be proactive. It shouldn't take that long. Call the Yamaha Corporate customer service line. If you can get a hold of someone, they will look into it. Mine is taking too long also. Supposedly ordered by dealer over 5 weeks ago. I called Yammie corporate the other day. They called my dealer then called my back. Something about the kit missing parts or some such mumbo-jumbo. Anywho, the nice Yammie rep said they would send out the correct stuff. Should be there in a week or so.

But then another little bird told me the kits just went on backorder. There is a ship with lots of them sitting outside the port of Long Beach just waiting to unload. Port issues or something. That little bird is extremely knowledgeable. Unfortunately.

I've put a few hundred miles on the bike since the transmission-ectomy and I'm noticing a slight smell of coolant when I turn off the motor. I don't see any leaks anywhere. Thoughts?

Probably spilled a bit filling the rad or if they "burped" it.. BTDT. Should go away.......

I agree with Ray BUT I would lift the tank and make sure there is no leak around the o-rings for the coolant pipe and make sure all connections to the radiator/thermostat are secure. Easy to end out with a bit of a leak.

Well, 7 weeks after the recall kit for my '17 FJR was ordered the dealer called me yesterday to say the parts had finally arrived. Cripes. It is scheduled to go under the knife next Tuesday. They have done three already, and 7 more scheduled behind mine. Finally making some progress....

Good to hear. Hope everything goes well. Mine has been flawless, and it was the first my shop had done. With three done, sounds like you are dialed in.

There was damage done already, part of the trans had to be pulled out with a slide hammer and is seized. Well no timeline for the part needed from Japan ATM. Insert crying, screaming, pouting kinda happy the trans did not fail while riding emoji here.

There was damage done already, part of the trans had to be pulled out with a slide hammer and is seized. Well no timeline for the part needed from Japan ATM. That sounds a little suspicious to me.
The nature of the failure is something breaking, not getting seized. Can't imagine what might have happened and how the bike could possibly have been rideable with something "stuck" or "damaged" that badly.
Won't do you any good now but you should try to get some more information.
(But then, what do I know...?)

I'm a suspicious guy by nature. Something does not smell right. I would expect seizure and breakage and/or symptoms of such whilst you were riding it. Not zero symptoms while you were riding it.

I'd like to see from Mammy Yamaha how many other "bent but not busted" trannys were out there.

Things may be such a precise fit it needs coaxing with a slide hammer out, I wouldn't go all jumping to suspicions.....

Could be, but they obviously beat on it hard enough to break something that wasn't broke in the first place (or the bike wouldn't have been rideable). Maybe something flaked off the 2nd gear cog and caused something to jam when they attempted disassembly?? I would certainly like to hear the story once they are finished with it. To the OP, nothing to do but wait...

Valve check and plug change when it was sitting on the bench.

Well I just got back from the dealer today after checking on my FJR. A machined hub that holds what I best describe as the output shaft from the transmission had some damage done to it on the inside of the transmission. Those score marks prevented the hub from sliding out of the side of the transmission. A corner of the hub chunked off it when they used a slide hammer to get the hub from the transmission case. There had to be something inside the trans bouncing around and marked up that machined surface that sticks a little thru the case into the transmission gear housing. No date available from the dealer atm.

So I'm curious, had you been having trouble with the tranny prior to taking it in? Was your 2nd gear cracked/chipped (wondering what caused the scoring)? What's the prognosis, replacement gear cassette (the recall parts) takes care of it?

I had not rode it much since last October but both times it was a nice calm ride, it was due another oil change very soon and I always noticed that before the oil needs changing the lower gears always had a very small issue coming to a stop. Me nor the tech am not able to determine what cause the marring on the machined hub, but the hub and the bearings and two nuts must be replaced. The recall cassette is installed into the engine assy already. I DO NOT think this was caused by the mechanic removing the hub, it does look like something had been bouncing around inside the cassette housing.
