Need the T-patch to fill the hole keeping water away from the tire cords. But yes a common inner tube patch on the inside of the tire will suit to hold air.

Meh - string plug, followed by the spit/soap bubble test at 42 psi. Check it again after 20 -50 miles. Then ride the snot out of it until those cords show.

If I already had the tire off the rim, I would do the patch-plug properly from the inside. Otherwise, I would do the same as you. Watch it carefully and check pressure for a few days and then forget about it until its past the wear bars. That one looks like it is in at an angle so the sticky string might work even better than the patch-plug.

I know the double string I installed on CA 299, was Z-Rated on Hwy 50 in Nevada...After riding the piss out of it on CA 36 and CA 49.

Curious. Would the tire being repaired with air pressure in it be different than a repair done with the tire off the rim?? Would the repair done off the rim suffer additional stress when mounted and pressurized?? Just the wandering of my feeble mind.

A purse-sized spray bottle of eyeglass cleaner is in the plug kit I carry. The eyeglass cleaner fluid has a bit of soap for forming bubbles. When I ran out I lazily filled with generic Windex.

My parts are in. Dealer has me on the list. He said he would call a day or so in advance so I could get it in. No point in letting the shop store it for a week or so. I feel much better having it here until they are ready to do the work. Hopefully all will go well and no issues after the surgery. Mine is a 2019 with only 15K on the odo.

I just swung by my local-ish dealer today over in Champaign Urbana. I had a dr. appointment and stopped in since it was on the way home.

I asked them how, if any, of the Recall are going? 2 of the 3 parts/service guys had never heard of anything related to any FJR recall. One of the guys said they heard it was 14 hours to do and they would be losing money on what Yamaha was paying them. So they would prefer to not do any of them if they could help it. They said they had a couple of good techs that can do it no prob, but we can't lose money.

I asked about the brake switch recall and they had no clue.

I felt like asking them if they still sold Yamaha products. LOL

That's been the attitude of every dealer I have ever talked to up in the Chicago area regarding customer service.

Down here, when I need bike work done, the conversation usually starts out like this, "Hey Griff/Duane! You busy? There's this thingy..."

Picked up my '17 FJR today after the recall for the brake switch and transmission. It runs fine, idles fine and shifts without problem. Is shifting better? Don't know it never gave me problems at all ever - always been snick, snick and still is. The '17 is better than the 09 which would go clunk from neutral to 1st.

Got it home and checked the engine oil. It is overfilled. Checked the engine coolant and it is either over or under filled as I could not see, with the aid of a flashlight while jiggling the reservoir, the coolant level. The simplest of things matter.

Will check these things further tomorrow.

Coolant is probably underfilled. If over, it overflows when hot and usually drops close to the max fill line as the engine cools. Might have been filled by the shop but not heat cycled to expel air bubbles in the radiator.

Define overfilled.... how did you check it... warmed it up for x minutes, let it sit for x minutes and where did it fall in the sight glass? A properly filled FJR can easily be a full sight glass eventually. Fire the bike up and if the sight glass goes empty, you're not overfilled.

Coolant needs to be burped. The most careful of mechanic rarely gets it right the first time. However the good mechanic should have checked after a couple heat cycles.

I'm way past the point of looking at oil level on a hot engine. Drained, no filter, fill with 4 quarts is right at the top of the sight glass. If that is where it is cold then I don't look until the next day of riding.

1 gallon with a filter change is always what mine have taken as far as oil.

After several days of riding, my coolant (post recall) went from perfectly at the high mark, to the very bottom of the bottle. No smell, no drip. I topped it off through the fairing and no further issues. Must have been a burp.

I've always checked my coolant stone cold. Its normal level is something like 1/3 to 2/3 between the min and max marks. Filling it up to the max mark when cold is just a waste, next cold check it's back to its 1/3 to 2/3 level, stays like that between services.
