Earlier this year I looked out the kitchen window and saw a motorcyclist talking on the phone. After a few minutes I noticed him fiddling with his motorcycle. I wandered over and saw the guy working on an older BMW. I offered tools and help if he needed it, I also offered to help him push his bike into my driveway and get it off the street. I thought I was doing good offering some troubleshooting hints. Finally he turns to me and says,"I'm Max BMW Dealer's motorcycle recovery man. My BMW broke down on my way to work." He then went on to explain the type of tow truck he specified to come fetch his bike. As the tow guy loaded his bike I got a running commentary like a sport broadcaster as he critiqued every move the tow truck driver made. I now know that it's a flat bed truck with a front wheel chock or one of Max vans and nothing else. I also love to see a solid verification that IRONY is alive and well in the world

The way I’ve been thrashing my tires and inflicting scramjet acceleration on my supposedly-afflicted 2018 transmission lately, (pardon the run-on sentence), might easily be misconstrued as a hate crime. I love this bike.

With deference and respect to you, Bill, may I suggest that until your recall is done, if it doesn't kill your tire thrashing buzz too much, nor put a damper on your scramjet acceleration shenanigans, maybe back off a wee bit for the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift?

(how's that for a run-on question?)

Like maybe tilt the wrist forward a smidge at about 7,500, and then roll her back on a smidge more gently? If memory serves me correctly (and it does), there should be plenty enough G's to get the job done.

I deserve neither deference or respect. I often go fast and I like to accelerate and decelerate swiftly when it’s safe and fun to do so. I’ve spent a lot of time at higher rpms in 2nd gear, and shifting into and out of second gear, both in my 14, and on my 18. I’m certainly not abusing my beloved steed more, knowing that Yamaha thinks it needs replacement. Good post- prudence is prudent.

"nee"? In the exhaust?

That reminds me to ask/beg once the thing is apart to reverse the direction of the problematical centerstand bolts. Will probably offer to pay to service the linkage while they are in there.

By the book, supposed to use new gaskets and torque the nuts. No re-torque should be required. Psst, you can reuse the existing gaskets and no retorque needed either..... at least it wasn't on my project FJR.

Centerstand removal not needed for the recall, but yep, if ya got the pipes off, switcheroo the bolts around.

Are those copper gaskets? If so, they would benefit from annealing before they get used again.

Delivered the FJR for the recall, they will start its on Monday. Should be able to pick up on Thursday. Closed Wednesdays. The service rep stated he received 6 more calls today and all are set to come in for the recall. Just wish mine wasn't first. He stated they will take a little longer on mine to iron out any issues.....fingers crossed.

You will be fine.... they'll be studying those instructions so thoroughly and will take their time at every step. As big a job as it is time-wise, it ain't all that hard...... don't worry, be happy.

Got a call from the dealer asking what oil i use so they can wrap up the repairs to the bike. Maybe that implies tomorrow or saturday and i can pick it up. Will see how it runs and if it leaks oil... I'm curious what, if anything, feels different from the new "firmware" update.

Today, I got an envelope labeled with the words Yamaha, and Safety Recall Notice, in red letters.

It contained two recall notices. One for the brake switch on my 18, and one for the brake switch on my 2014. No mention of the transmission. Maybe it’s in another letter somewhere.
