The parts are on order for my bike..The dealership thinks early March. I’ll get the relay arm replaced with the sexy one modded by Snowflake while the bike is apart.

That's why I thought the statement that they couldn't guarantee it would be worked on "regularly" was a red flag. That signaled to me that it would be worked on over time, which I'd be against.

Sounds like you found someone that is a better fit for you anyway.

There are two dealerships in Spokane so I picked one based on a tip from a insider. Parts are ordered. The service adviser said parts delivery has been wildly inconsistent and figured it could be 1 week to 5 weeks. The journey has begun. I will be asking them how long it will take to finish the work. I don't want my bike sitting around for days in the shop.

I am wishing I would have kept my 09, my 17 has been a disappointment.

The 09 had 108k on it. At the time it seemed like a good idea to upgrade but I didn't consider I would not like the ES rear shock, as most folks on the forum don't object to the ES shock. And with the exception of SkooterG nobody ever complained about the the six speed and he figured it was just a bad example. Generally we may wait a year after a model update before jumping in. We waited four years to learn there was a flaw in the transmission, rather odd indeed.

I don't think I will sell the 17 as there is nothing else in the market segment of interest. Large displacement Sport Touring motorcycles are dying breed. If the FJR goes away BMW will be the only manufacturer in the market with updated product.

Odds are the 17 will be fixed properly and will work well for many years to come, it is just fallen a bit short of lofty expectations.

So today I got some good news from one of the other dealers that I contacted this morning. They seem to be very on top of things and able and willing to do the job. This is the dealer that deals with other Yamaha products like Marine, generators and so on. Without any delays or any other issues, they checked my VIN over the phone verified therecall. The shop manager took it to the parts department to check and availability. Later he called me back to tell me that the parts are available he's placing the order to have the parts on hand. He also told me that they do police motorcycle work for a local police department and they have three FJRs that they will be working on prior to mine, then mine. I'm glad to hear they'll have some practice before they get to mine. So according to them I should be able to be in there in about 2 weeks, and it means that within 2 weeks they'll be working on three other FJRs before mine.
One other dealer that I had called earlier today before I got a hold of this last one, was telling me that I needed to take the bike in, they would have create an RO to inspect it, then submit it to Yamaha for approval and then see about parts availability and when they could get to it. Another not so good process quite frankly. Yet this other one was able to do everything over the phone and set me up to get everything prepped for when I get there.
He also told me that they have at their shop the number two Gold Star tech in the country and that he is the one assigned to his jobs. That's some piece of mind as well....
Now that's the way to do it.

Took 4 years to discover the “problem”, must not be that much of a problem.

What has surfaced since the announcement? One previously known 2nd gear disintegrated and destroyed the engine. Since the recall another getting the recall was found to have a missing tooth. Out of 2300 or so in North America? I’m quaking with fear!

Having said that, I think my transmission shifted better the first 400 miles than it has the past 69,000. From 1 to 2 is the most noticeable. And most sensitive as to what oil it has. Will be curious to know how shift feel changes.

70,000 miles and no failure? Am not going to pop wheelies or race around (I don’t anyway) but I’m not going to worry.

The NHTSA document claimed approximately 50% in the VIN ranges would be affected. Anyone in those ranges not recalled per the Yamaha VIN lookup? Mine is E5, not in NHTSA but is a hit on the Yamaha site. Dealer knew this was coming but didn’t know the VINs were online before I called. Have been promised a callback when they know. Confirmed mine is recalled.

My bike is at the dealership as of this morning. I used my AMA roadside assistance and had it towed in. The dealer said the parts should be in by the end of next week.

As an aside, the tow company didn't send a flatbed so I had to put the bike on the stinger and tie it down. Seemed sketchy to me but he said he did it all the time. I breathed a sigh of relief when the truck rolled into the dealership. The whole way following the tow truck, I was thinking about having to call the insurance company and telling them I ran over my motorcycle with my pickup truck when it fell off the tow truck.

Won't happen that way.... an FJR apart takes up a ton of room, it won't be apart laying around taking up all that space.

Also I would think it's a money issue. Why start a 14 hour job and drag it out 30-60 days. They don't get paid till it's done. Now, what they MIGHT do is let your bike sit untouched for 30-60 days and when you become the squeaky wheel then jump on it and do it all in a couple of days.

It makes no sense at all to crack open a bike and let it sit for 60 days. That doesn't help you, the mechanic or the dealership.
