Back on a FJR

Post by kieefjr »

Several years ago I followed this forum and that other sandbox but fell astray to the AdvBike phase so in the tone of the Beatles “Back in the USSR”,
kieefjr is back on a FJR. :D

I wasn’t a huge influence or poster but I enjoyed the comments, information and hit a few rallies.

Anyway my Super Tenere days are over, just to too dang tall. Even after lowering I kept getting into situations that were “uncomfortable”. Great bike and sweet motor so I hope the new owner really enjoys it more than I did.
Looks like I’m off to a good start for the new year because this new owner happened to have a 2016 FJR for sell and was looking for an ST.
I posted an ad on TN’s CL as a feeler for interest on my ST and this FJR owner from FL saw it and gave me a call.
We completed the deal today.

I always liked blue FJR’s but I seldom saw used 2016’s coming up for sale within my area. I was also never up to crossing state lines to find one but this guy was in his search for a ST.

This bike has a lot of goodies on it and slick as a pin.

Questions, since be been out of the fray for a while.

1. I’m aware of the tranny recall as of now it doesn’t have a VIN# with the soft 2nd gear If it does end up on the recall, I’ll deal with it.

2. Is the 2016 considered a Genlll or GenlV or a Genlllss which I advocated for with no luck.

3. Any issues with these later models?

4. Any mods that are essential? Isn’t the seat supposed to better than previous years? Probably irrelevant but curious if some are living with it and of course mods are personal.

I did have a 2013 for a short while but at the time I had back issues and I never took the time to make it fit me like my 2005 model did. Since I had back surgery las year I’m hoping I’ll have success setting this bike up.
Looking forward to enjoying my new to me FJR and watching this forum.

Beautious blue. Congrats on all that working out so nicely.
1. Too early to tell if you are included in the recall, follow the thread for updates as we come to know them.
2. I resisted for a while, but now will call 2016-up a GenIV, it's just easier.
3. None except the two recalls, tranny and brake light switch. Oh, and you will need an OBD Reader and an app to access any error codes.
4. The seat is the same seat shape since 2006.

A recall on the kickstand switch and ECM was completed.
Many goodies including Clearwater lamps, Smart brake module ST2 and a Adaptive Radar among the highlights.

Very interesting and timely, for me at least. I would not get rid of my FJR for anything but I want to add a S10 to my inventory. Been talking to FJRPittsburgh and he got me thinking about the size and weight might be a little much since I would be new to going off-road a bit. I am still looking but not as locked in as was. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this!!

Did you get that beautiblue from a member of this forum? That owner was going from a '16 FJR TO a ST?!? Was it an even swap? Ohmy! Sooo many questions! LOL
Shinny Yamaha blue is great!!! But then again, I like a FJR in all colors.

Welcome back!

I hear FJRs are good! Seat is the same...get modified seat if you want to do multi day straight line road trips. For a day ride in the twisties, stock will generally do...if you are man enough.

Bar risers allowed me to sit up straight. Straight back = no back fatigue.

Don't know for sure, was he from FL?
He previously owned a ST.

It's got Heli's on it now and it came with Blocks in a box. I need to lean fwd a bit, one of the reasons I left the ST. I tried the Helis on a 2013 model and changed it to blocks. I might give this one more time plus the 13 had a Lamm seat. From my experience if I change the seat I need to do that first before swapping risers and shields.
