What exactly is that top box there on the back? Looks really functional. How is it mounted?
Thanks.
That's a Pelican 1520 Protector case. That topbox has been on my FJR since I bought it from Petey 75,000 miles and several years ago. DesignFlaw06 3D-printed a little divider that wedges in tightly on the left side. It organizes pens, air pressure gauge, spare FJR key, my wallet, house keys (nothing in my pockets while riding), and leaves enough room for my briefcase when commuting. Waterproof, lockable, and guaranteed so thoroughly that Pelican has provided three sets of replacement latches already.

If I'm feeling rowdy, clothes for a weekend ride and tire repair kit go in there, the hardcases stay home, and she becomes a badass "R13" sportbike.

It came with a mounting kit from Twisted Throttle: steel plates, spacers, twist-locks, and extra long bolts mount directly to the FJR back deck. Worth an email to them to ask if they have any left over. The same kit should be able to mount any plastic case.

<edit, 1 hour later> With different spacers, I could probably get it level when on the center stand ... which would make it an excellent table at gas station lunch stops.

Uncle Hud,

Thanks, I want to get one like that. I seldom ride with the panniers.
Right now I use a cloth rider's bag on the back, if anything.
The usual top boxes are just too much back there, for this kid.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.
Yeah, I ride motorcycles. I know why dogs put their heads out of the car windows.
Yeah, I fly hang gliders (3000 hrs.+). I know why the birds sing.

There are a few manufacturers of Pelican look-alikes and quite robust, trick is to find the size you want, and can get colours..... I have a Harbor Fright one, good size that I wish was taller.... $50.
I mounted it on a Givi rack by first making two flat bar rails the length of the case, tad shorter, drilled to suit, then drilled the case, used 1.5" dia fender washers with button head screws. Very robust. Plan it out first.... Pelican has a similar design mount kit I kinda copied, sorta.

Today, I stopped at the mailbox. I mean I got off the bike, which normally never happens. And I happened to see that my light bar (admore) AND my factory taillight section were doing drunken things. The horrific conditions I’ve been riding in over the last two weeks (just total immersion and a general scuba environment) managed to introduce water into the light bar.

Pulled the light bar and admore harness off. This is why I don’t do splicing and stuff. The admore light bar and plug and play harness have lasted forever, and came off on five minutes. The light bar outlasted my 2014 fjr and have been on my 2018 for 59,000 plus miles. So they’ve outlived their expected use.

I love their light bar. With the LED tail lights of the 2018, I may not replace the bar. The stock lights are pretty good. Time will tell if I tweeze or not after that long with a big old LED bar back there. :)

I sent twisted throttle an email. If they don’t carry these any more, I’m gonna explore the fastener selection at the hardware store.

Today, I picked it up from lying on the armor in the middle of the road. Got rear ended. Second car back hit the car behind me, car behind me (driven by an illegal with no license), hit me. Little sore, but no injuries. Guy that hit me was preparing to ease on down the road while I was still getting my bearings, until somebody pointed out that he was set to mosey.

Seemed like a really nice guy once I had his keys in my pocket. Wasn’t his fault someone ran into him.

Slight dent to left can. Bump on left case, very minor. Plastic tail section folded under. Contact was made with my rear wheel, but I don’t think it was enough to damage anything. Once again, armor saves a lot of headache and damage.

Rode fine on the way home, I suppose. Doing the insurance dance trying to get things fixed. Ride safe out there.

Glad you are ok. Those situations always suck.

That happened to me not long after I started riding. Banged up the back of my cruiser but didn't hurt me. Luckily I was not hit hard.

Car number 3 was texting, hit car number 2, who hit me.

The young lady in car 3 got out and continued her texting. She was very perturbed we were interrupting her day.

I checked on the lady in car number 2. She rewarded me by telling her insurance company I hit her.
They filed a claim on my insurance luckily my insurance called BS and didn't pay her a dime.

Never underestimate how crappy people can be in situations like this.

It's amazing how someone's attitude can drastically change while being held at gun point, isn't it.

At least that how I picture it going down...

Glad you're ok - sure could have been a much different (worse) outcome.
