These are from the German article and MIGHT only be referring to bikes sold in Germany (or Europe). The Transport Canada link does not specify serial number ranges but says that the recall notices will be sent out. I'm sure owners will (eventually) be able to contact Yamaha Canada to find out if their bike is affected.
Just because a particular US bike (or Canadian bike) does not fall into the S/N ranges given in the article does not necessarily mean a particular bike is not affected. You will have to wait for the US announcement and roll out from Yamaha USA. No NHTSA recall information yet.

No, I didn't know that. I had posted my reply, then had come concerns about how much it may piss off Ray, then a short time later I decided to deleted the content. I'll look for the X (marks the spot) next time.

I do it all the time when I see I've replied multiple times in 1 thread during 1 session. I take the last one, edit it, copy it all, exit, edit the first post and paste that on to the end, then delete the extra message I just pasted into the original. Rinse and repeat if you see multiple quotes in one post.

Like just now with this post that was originally below the posts below this. The X may only show up on the last of your posts in a thread. YMMV.

That is correct.

No indicator that more bikes will or won’t be affected. Or whether US bikes will even be involved. Time will tell. With as many miles as I have on mine, not terribly concerned.

I don't understand how the recall can effect so few bikes across so many years. If it was a bad batch of gears you'd think it would only effect one or two model years (all bikes built until the bad parts were used up). If it was a design flaw it would be every bike with the six speed gearbox.

According to the VINs, the 10 digit is the year. 0 = 20. All the VINs have 0 in the 10th digit location so they should all be 2020 bikes.

I wouldn't get pissed off, lol. I was just saying manufacturers have some freedom, that it may vary among manufacturers, and given modern assembly logistics and systems computerization, having VINS like 000001 in the old days may or may not be happening these days. I think mostly not if the operation is large, but..... All good.

Well, I had forgotten about this incident in 2017, a gear had broken in his 2017 and destroyed the engine. Yammy got him a new crated engine and got the old one back. Texas bike. But the only one I have ever heard of... this was posted in another sandbox on 4-5-2017. Entire thread link included, has the whole story and pics....

Had an interesting experience recently on my 2016 FJR with about 7300 miles.

I rode to lunch with some friends on Saturday, March 25. After lunch, we got back on the bikes and headed out. Came to a red light, it turned green and we pulled away. I'm riding with cruisers and was the second bike. Pulling away was nothing dramatic or "spirited". The bike made a funny bang, lost power, and started knocking. Got it pulled over to a safe place in about 100 yards. It would run, but the lack of power and knocking continued. I had it towed to the shop and went by to visit with them yesterday.

The manager came out and asked me to join him in the shop. They had disassembled the engine that morning and had it on a bench. He showed me the inside. It looked like a grenade went off in there. There was shrapnel everywhere. There was a hole in the wall separating the transmission from the crank-chamber, the crank shaft was chewed up, one con-rod was broken, and the underside of the piston was chewed up.

They suspect that one of the gears disintegrated, drove through the side of the case, and broke the con-rod before bouncing around and chewing up everything else.

Yamaha has asked him for photos and a parts list. He suspects, when they see the extend of the damage, they may just send him a crate motor to replace the whole thing.

So...now a question. Anyone else experience anything similar with this wonderful new six-speed transmission?

I think if I was planning to buy a later model FJR, I would be waiting to see how all of this works out. Nothing to say (yet) that it affects any imported into the US but it seems likely if European and Canadian bikes are affected. (Especially after reading Ray's link) This could be the death knell for FJR if Yamaha doesn't handle it right! I know I wouldn't be too happy about bringing in my bike to have the local dealer replace a transmission. Thankfully, we have hot seen a bunch of failures - at least failures that made it to the forums.

If the letters are in positions 4 - 8 (from left to right of the VIN) that's the 'features of the bike' code which can vary.

Transmission repair will be replacing the gears as a set I expect. Remove engine, turn it over, split the lower case, replace, reassemble. Simple enough but big labour hours. See pic of parts diagram... gears not available separately as they were for 5 speeds.

I assume you will wait until spring? Anyplace local that you trust to do a decent job or would you take it back to where you bought it?
Finding a competent shop is key - so many things that can get screwed up with a service this extensive.
