Is it a gen 5 or 6? Is it still the best damn continent gobbling, 2-up sport-tourer out there?

I did a comparison matrix on the website and the specifications, price and even color are EXACTLY the same as 2020.Hppants wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:34 pm Can't believe I'm the first to report this to the forum:

Glad to see another year. I want at least one more, the newer the better. But not ready to trade just yet.

No you need one of these for trans-continent travel. Optional sail for travel to Europe.wheatonFJR wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:43 pm Is it a gen 5 or 6? Is it still the best damn continent gobbling, 2-up sport-tourer out there?

Is the passenger looking at the camera and saying, "Why me?". That is one ugly fusion of shit that came out of a committee. The Edsel would be embarrassed to park next to that thing. How Yamaha which came out with the sleek FJR 20 years ago, can come up with that hind end of a donkey in 2020 shows that even good companies can be run into the ground.danh600 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:47 pmNo you need one of these for trans-continent travel. They were smart enough to put Star on it instead of Yamaha.wheatonFJR wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:52 pmIs the passenger looking at the camera and saying, "Why me?". I saw one in a dealership once. That thing is HUGE. Takes effort to get it off the side stand. The salesman had no idea how to work the electronics.

Re: 2021 FJR is out - one more year!!
Interesting that Yamaha rates the FJR for 36 mpg. I was hoping that the low mileage meant the engine had gained hp or ft/lbs, but no. I'm glad to see that Yamaha still is producing the FJR even though Europe's regulations has killed it on the continent.
That rates right up there with this handsome devil.danh600 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:47 pmNo you need one of these for trans-continent travel. Dyno numbers: 166.1 hp at 10,200 rpm and 89 pound-feet of torque at 8,500 rpm. When I read the price my wallet fell out on the floor dead. $25.5k.bungie4 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 3:15 pmhttps://www.kawasaki.com/en-us/motorcyc ... sx-se-pluswheatonFJR wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:43 pm Is it a gen 5 or 6? Chain drive. We test sat a Kamikaze Kamisaki Kawasaki, my wife pointed out the passenger foot placement and delivered a resounding NO. Young, short legged passengers only. She dismissed a BMW K1300S and BMW K1600 for poor passenger ergos too. Looks like the FJR lives to ride into our future.
For the price of a FJR I might at least consider one, but I'd have to find a new, young wife to ride with me

Re: 2021 FJR is out - one more year!!
I find the FJR and the new Tracer 9 GT an interesting comparison. At almost 160 pounds lighter I am wondering if it is sometime to look at for someone wanting a lighter bike. I love the FJR now but will I ten years from now? Of course by then there will be different models to compare. So this is just really an exercise in theory, not something that is going to happen.
The new 890 motor is certainly capable of touring. I love the 847 triple on my MT09, this version should be better. Just not sure it will get the bullet proof miles that the FJR gets. Plus, it doesn't look like it has the protection for the rider like and FJR. You would think it would handle as well or better than an FJR in corners. The chain is not as hard to keep up as I though. I don't do two up so the smaller size might be fine.
I would need to ride one. No way I would trade an FJR for one without a Demo. Then I would have to really like it a lot.

Mostly just thinking out load.

Hasn't the FJR always been rated at 36 mpg? I know I get better.
They changed the MT09 engine to meet the Euro emission standards. It was an 847 now it's an 890.

Re: 2021 FJR is out - one more year!!
Wanting a lighter bike as you get older -- as a data point, we are still riding Ms. Piggy (as a Canadian rider named the FJR) and one of us is almost mid seventies in age. Then again, 75% of our miles are two-up and often long distance so the reliable and mostly comfortable FJR makes good sense for us.
------------------------------------------------------------
The last Demo I went to was to test ride a Gen III FJR as a probable replacement for my 120k mile Gen I. The FJR was out when I got there. A short while later the FJR pulled into the parking lot. The rider was jumping up and down on the foot pegs shouting YA-HOOOOOOO as he rode past. It was Fred W. That pretty much told me what I needed to know. I took my demo ride. Sold. When I got back I was expecting to buy the FJR that the dealer had on the floor. Well, that was the plan. Except I found Fred W already inside completing his transaction for the bike.

Re: 2021 FJR is out - one more year!!
I did a demo on the MT09 two years in a row before I bought it. The FJR I bought without riding one. Honestly I loved it but wondered if I had made a mistake. It was a lot to handle after coming off a cruiser. Now I love it. I don't see myself not owning one for a long time to come.ionbeam wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:29 pmWanting a lighter bike as you get older -- as a data point, we are still riding Ms. Piggy (as a Canadian rider named the FJR) and one of us is almost mid seventies in age. Black and ES only. Who wants black... iff'n ya wanna sell a bunch, coulda done better IMHO.
Tracer 9 GT, fixed the ugly turn signals, etc., added some funny looking bags, some gadgets and ES.... price increase. The Tracer 900 GT still shown on the US site, but not Canajan. Hopin' the gadget buyers "upgrade" so I can get the 900 GT cheaper. Ain't buyin' a new one, don't want ES.
