Information on older Garmin zumo upgrades

Post by fencer »

I found a company that can expand internal memory/ repair older 550 660 etc.

$120 is still cheaper than a new unit

The cost would be $99.70 plus return shipping - this includes map work(loading the new maps, $12) and the 4GB upgrade. Because of the age of the unit, a small internal backup battery should also be replaced while we are doing the repair, if it goes out it no longer will acquire satellites, this would be an additional $11.95

palmdr has been a tried and true Garmin repair facility for years. I've never used them but everyone who has raves about them.

I wonder if they have an aftermarket replacement screen for the 660/665 that is significantly brighter than OEM. These were never bright enough for bright daylight.
Complete screen and digitizer is only $46.95, according to their website. Might send them an email.

Griff is the one who put me on tho them. They fixed a couple of 550 cradles for me and updated a 550 unit. They unlocked the unit to update it to the latest map, also added some storage for a bigger card or whatever it called.

They are great.
I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!

Thanks Fencer. I thought my well used 660 took a shit on the way home from RedLodge when it just went dead. Almost gave up when I decided to remove the battery and when I put it back it it works just fine. At least now I have a repair source when and if needed as I don't want to have to buy 3 new cradles for each bike if I had to replace it with a different model.

It's too deep, this is a bike not a canoe.

I sent them an email about the screen - no good news there for the 660/665...

"Unfortunately the hardware dictates voltage/current going to the LEDs that light up the screen, further the physical design of the LCD screen only allows for one string of LEDs. It is possible to overdrive the LEDs but then you run the risk of burning one out, like a string of Christmas lights, when one goes out they all stop working. You would not be the first to request this, unfortunately there is no way that I have found to accommodate the request."
