Cost comparison. What did you pay for your NEW FJR

Not a super deal, but I grabbed it before it was gone since it's likely no more will be made.

Nobody wants to spend more than they have to for a new motorcycle but there is no need to be upset if you spent $1000 more than someone else did. A small difference in the initial purchase price pales into insignificance when you consider the cost of ownership over perhaps five years. Do the calculations for 20,000 miles per year (for a total of 100,000 miles) and see what you come up with. Assume maybe a $2500 residual value at the end. Calculate as a cost per mile with $1000 difference in the initial price. (I have done this calculation and I worry less about initial cost although a little shocked with the total cost of ownership.) Of course, these figures will change depending on where you live, how you ride and whether you do maintenance yourself or pay someone else to do it.

Include costs associated with initial price, financing costs (if any), depreciation, insurance, annual licensing/registration, safety inspections, fuel, tires, oil, filters, plugs, general maintenance, servicing, mechanical repairs, accident repairs. Don't forget to add in the costs associated with farkles - seats, exhaust, windshields, auxiliary lighting etc. You can decide whether you want to include a cost value for your own labor if you do it yourself (I didn't).

Variation in pricing from various dealers is interesting and knowing what others have paid may help you get the best deal possible in your area but don't walk away from an "OK" deal for the sake of a couple hundred bucks.

In 2004 I paid $11,400 (non abs) all in.
In 2008 I paid $12,500 all in.

In July of 2014 I purchased a 2014 A for $12,500 in Wisconsin. Paying tax and title back in Michigan my OTD price was $13,300. While I was there a gentleman from South Dakota had also made the drive for the price and was loading up a FJR in his pickup.

I had to get a 3 hour ride to take a 3 hour ferry ride across Lake Michigan, grab a taxi and take a $50 cab ride to the dealership in hopes that I wasn't being lied to and a bike was there, as I had no other way home. I got there at 2 pm, was on road at 3 pm and drove 8 hours home. It beat the prices in Ohio by $2,000 and Michigan was even worse. Downside is I don't have a relationship with a local dealership if I ever needed them to go to bat for me. So far it has not been back to a dealership. Whatever you paid the cruise is worth it. I have not seen near the deals on the 2016+ models.

You bested published msrp by about $2k - that's a decent indicator. It will be interesting to see if the deals get better going forward as the current employment and economic state change.

In 2009, I hobbled out the door and had a new 09 delivered to my garage for $10,200, which included the Yamaha Y.E.S. extended warranty. I thought it was a pretty good deal at the time.

$9999 from D&H OTD with a cert of origin and a sales receipt that I then took back to my state and paid (only) their taxes (without a bunch of dealership line-item markups).

I paid just over $11k for my '07 OTD in August of '07. Found out later, I didn't get the best deal, and I definitely didn't get the worst. That bike has been very good to me, so no complaints.

Since I knew NOTHING about FJRs, I ended up getting a 3 year, unlimited mileage service plan for $1000, at BobbyJ's Yamaha here in Albuquerque. Since I was putting about $10k per year back then, I got the way better end of that deal. By the time it was over, I had found the FJRFourm and was able to take over doing my own service. However, the relationship I created over that 3 year period has been worth the $1k that I paid for that plan. They are very good to me and have helped me and my friends out, in a pinch, more than once.

Thankfully, I found the other Forum and learned about the YES warranty in December of '07. I ended up buying from D&H in the Spring of '08.

Really, it all came together. I still have that same bike and still love it. Totally worth the money I paid!

I will have to look at the paper work cause my memory is terrible. But here is what I remember.

At the time I wanted to buy local. Really didn't want to do a fly and buy. My thoughts have changed on that now.

So in 2014 I went looking for an FJR. One dealership had a 2013 for $1000 off MSRP. They also had a 2012 for $2000 off MSRP. They were supposed to get a 2014 in soon. They never did or never called me.

I checked around a few other dealers and they were all close to the same price. Most Yamaha dealers didn't have one on the floor and the ones that did didn't seem to be in a hurry to unload them. Very few of the dealer even followed up with me.

Finally got a new 2013 in 2014 for about MSRP less $1,100, but they added back some fees and of course taxes. So I was back up to about MSRP of 15,890.

Sounds like I get the prize for worst deal.

EXACTLY! Who gives a shit what you paid? Obviously no one wants to get hosed and we all want the best deal, but if we were not happy with the deal we made, we were free to walk away at any point. If one is happy with their deal when they make it, just stay happy. I specifically did not buy in Albuquerque because they wanted too much. The dealer in Durango didn't mess around at all. I asked him the price, he told me, and I was happy. Haha!

Bought my '13A in March '14, paid $12,750 in including the YES which the dealer sold for the D&H price once I showed him their pricing.

65,000 miles and 4 years later sold it for $5,500 needing a major service and tires.

Somewhat of a similar story for me as an accident with a power saw in 1987 left me with little to no use of my left hand so my 1980 Suzuki GS750E (first year of the 16 valve motor) sat rusting away in my drive way ending riding for me. Over the years I searched for the elusive Honda Matic to no avail. Fast forward to 2009 and my brother in law (Harley Guy) sends me the information about a Yamaha FJR1300 with a computer controlled clutch. I start to investigate but all the dealers I contacted said the same thing. Nothing on the floor and you need to order up front. Well I wasn't prepared to plop down a huge sum of money for a bike I couldn't even sit on and wiggle my butt around to see how it felt. But then I call a dealer in Brooklyn, he has an AE on the floor. To top it off he is about 20 minutes from where I was working at the time. You know how this ends, 16 grand and change out the door but I could ride again after over 20 years. Was it a good deal? Hell yeah.

The FJR was my 2nd bike ever. I made it to 2006 EOM by way of an Iron but SS1k and that gave me a grand total of about 3000 miles under my belt at the time.

First bike was a 2000 Katana
