Some reason my google fu is not working this morning.

What years belong to what generations of FJRs.

Is it decided that there is a gen 4?

Definite Gens are:

'03-'05 (US) Gen 1
'06-'12 Gen 2
'13-'15 Gen 3

Things get a little unsure from '15 up.

'16-'17 Gen 3.3?
'18-'20 Gen 3.6?
'18-'20 Gen 4?
'16-'20 Gen 4?

There are enough changes after the '15 there is a good case for the '16 and up to be Gen 4. Especially a good case for '17 and up to be Gen 4. Since Yamaha doesn't play the Gen game anymore we can make up the rules as it suits us.

Yo Alan. Why the distinction between '16, '17, and '18?

I would have answered '16 - '20 is either Gen 3.6 or Gen 4.

There is a gen 4. To some. As decided by the tech wonks at fjrforum, 2016+ was voted to be gen 4 (their generational tech spreadsheet is unparalleled.) The transmission, clutch,
and lighting were deemed enough to constitute a new gen.

Others, usually those with pre 2016 bikes, have seizures at the suggestion that there is a gen 4. Still others think the current gen is 3.5.

I know a couple of folks that have chest pain at the very suggestion that my bike is a gen 4. Folks who would pose
their opinion as fact (no one here). So I refer to the 2016+ as gen 4 every single chance I get.

I have no problem '16 up being Gen4.... OBD, 6 speed, Euro4 emissions, slipper clutch..... enough for me.

Ha. No issues on my part. Just curious what years were considered a gen 4. Seems everybody agrees on the years for the first 3 gens.

As an owner of a 2013 gen 3 I agree the newer bikes are gen 4. Lots of improvements over my bike.

My opinion the lights being the biggest.

What the heck difference does it make?

Far as I am concerned:
"Gen 1" is 2001.
"Gen 2" is 2002.
"Gen 3" is 2003.
etc.

Even if nothing else the paint color changed.

The important detail is the years the seats are interchangeable.
The years the windshields are interchangeable.
The wheels.
The body panels,
...

People that have Glocks sure like to put them in Generations.

That really has to be confusing cause they have a bunch of models and generations. Not sure how you could keep up with that.

A Harley guy was telling me that all those letters actually meant something.

I have had an FJR for 7 years and I still have no idea what it stands for.

That's easy:

Gen1: Disposable but acceptable.

Gen2: Disposable, because trash is disposable.

Gen3: Disposable, but better than the last clusterfuck they pressed onto people. These get a light rail, but using a light on the rail causes malfunctions in 20% of the pistols. No one can figure out why. Won't fit in Gen1 or 2 holsters.

Gen4: Disposable with plastic pins holding stupid plastic grip size accessories on. Seems the light rail issue is fixed, even though "it was not a problem."

Gen5: Disposable, and removed the finger groves, trying to go back to Gen1 glory, but too far behind S&W and CZ to ever get the market back. Supposedly wider slides create issues fitting into Gen3 and 4 holsters, but haven't seen that happen yet.

Smith and Wesson m&p’s have had far more malfunctions and failures than Glock and sig combined, in our shop. This despite being a relative rarity for us to deal with, at least as compared to Glock and Sig. I’m talking about over tens of thousands of rounds. Not bad, just not what I’d choose for work. Or self defense.

We have had several problems with safariland holsters binding with Glock, but I have no idea if it was with gen 5 guns. We always thought it was an out of spec or damaged holster. We see it several times a year with new safariland holsters out of the box in the hands of uniformed cadets.

I don’t think they were 5’s, but they might have been. Will have to ask them to keep score. :)

In a nod to the topic, I’ve been riding my gen 4/3.5/3 to the office this week. And it’s been glorious.
