Define slower.... the 6 speed gearing was made taller, thus a 5 speed will beat it off the line. Remember the debate how the Gen1's with their lower gearing were faster than the Gen2's.... I'd take a 5 speed over the 6 speed personally.

Dan, 2016 was the first year for LEDs, and the 6 speed transmission.

My '15 ES is simply the best motorcycle I ever rode. I can only assume the LEDs and the 6 speed make it better.

My 15 has LEDs (installed aftermarket ones) and 6th gear is not needed for lots of my riding. My pocket book also doesn’t need that 6th gear. Lol.

I am 99% sure I am out. I think I am going to wait a few years. My 2013 is just in too good shape to trade right now.


The bike is at Martin's Yamaha in Ocala Florida.

I got my MT09 there. They were good to deal with in my experiences. Small family run shop.

The bike has been on the floor for awhile so they might deal.

If they make you a great deal you owe me a beer.

Went fishing, caught a trout! (My 2015 has no need for a sixth gear. Neither do I. NC State Police shares that opinion.)

You know I just kind of went over the pros and cons.

Pros
1. I would go from 70,000 miles to zero.
2. I would go to a blue I really like. (But not a good enough reason to trade.)
3. I would get the new LED lighting. (I don't rid much at night, but would still love the LED lights)
4. I would have the 6 gear. ( On the fence on that one.)
5. The bike would be under warranty. ( It's a Yamaha. Knock on wood I have never used the warranty.)
6. Unless my mileage goes up drastically after I retire. I would never need another FJR. This one would wear me out.
7. CC not limited to 80.
8. ES suspension. That I would really like. I just can't seem to wrap my feeble mind around how to properly set up a suspension.
9. Slipper clutch. The clutch on the MT09 is amazing. It is effortless.

Cons
1. Money
2. Low trade in value of a 2013 that is a perfectly good bike. At 70,000 miles and reasonably maintained it should give me many more trouble free years. I might as well just wear it out.
3. 5 speed. The MT09, Scout and Valkyrie we own have 6. The Valkyrie needs 6, the others it often seems like I am looking for the proper gear. I don't seem to miss a 6th on the FJR. Living in the east I rarely cruise over 80 anyway.

Mainly it's just not grabbing me! Every bike I have bought I wanted really bad. I had to throttle back my enthusiasm at the dealership so I could make a good deal. If I didn't have an FJR this bike would be doing that too me now. However, I have a perfectly good FJR. It has a new set of tires. It needs only a little maintenance and it's ready for a long trip.

I mostly ride the MT09 for day rides right now. The FJR will probably come out when it gets cooler. Fairings, bigger windshield and heated grips might come in nice for a few months during our Florida winter.

So it was just a passing dream. Keeping the 2013.

IMO, the big thing is going from 70,000 miles to zero and having the last FJR you will need.
Color (good).
LED lights - never have to change another bulb!!! (good quality light too)
6-speed - Meh! Wouldn't be a big deal for me either. But not a downside either.
Warranty would be nice to have.
Ivan flash would fix your CC limitation and provide some other improvements. Haven't heard of anyone that regretted it.
ES suspension - your call but most like it. USD forks - most like them.
Slipper clutch - you can get the parts and modify your existing clutch - several people have done this.

Edit: I see you already decided while I was composing. You might still want to do the Ivan flash and slipper clutch. Some good aftermarket LED headlights while you are at it.

I have absolutely never stopped disgruntled at the side of the road, thrown my helmet down in disgust and said this thing sucks because of the only 5 gears. It has gobs of torque for the full range of the gear...so I don't see the point.

Regarding ES: I know someone with ES who is past the life of the suspension. Getting an aftermarket ES is a no go so far. So keep your A-model and keep refreshing the suspension if you want. ES owners wish it was that easy.

Wheaty the ASSIST and slipper clutch is really nice. My MT09 has it. The assist part is wonderful. The clutch is so easy to pull in and hold in it's amazing.
I have actually pulled in the MT09 clutch and for a brief second I thought something broke cause it pulled in so easy. I love it and it's a major upgrade. No more fatigue in the clutch hand even in heavy traffic.

As for 5 gears I am perfectly happy. 99% of my riding is in the east and at 80mph or less. So I never feel like I am over revving the FJR. The motor is smooth enough for me even on long interstate rides. Honestly I would only like a 6th gear if they left the first 5 just the way they are and added a 6 at the top. Having the 6th gear is not enough reason for me to trade. Like I said somewhere else. My MT09 and both my wifes bikes have 6 gears. I always seem to be searching for the right gear with them. Maybe just habit because of riding the FJR so long with just 5. The Valkyrie red lines at 6k so when you are doing spirited run up in speed it feels like roll the throttle, shift, roll the throttle, shift. Over and over in quick succession.

Funny thing on the MT09 it's so smooth I forget to up shift sometimes. I look down and I am hauling tail in 4th forgot all about 5 and 6. That motor is just that smooth.

Now ES I think I would like. My riding style is conservative and I don't push the FJR to the limit like most guys. I think an ES would be perfectly fine for me. Maybe if I rode a perfectly set up suspension on an A I would feel different. Intech helped me tweak my suspension early this year and I did notice a pretty good difference.

Ive gone 155+ a couple times on lonely straight locations and never felt I was over revving my engine. I don't have the hankerin to do that anymore cuz it was boring when I did it, and there are not typically the roads to do it on.

But ive also come charging through the mountains and forgot to shift out of 3rd when I get to a longer connector road. I do, but its usually up to 4th. Now, if im on the interstate all day because a gun was to my head, I absolutely could see a 6th gear.

Getting out of Flatistan, and getting to the mountain twisties, pretty much requires slabbing. The 6th gear does help in that respect.
