Today was the day...

Post by bungie4 »

Today was the day I semi-officially put the bikes away for the winter. God.

There likely will still be some rideable days between now and mid-November but all my free time will be spent packing and moving my shit over to Line's place. Which is where my bikes are.

I brought the 13 over first and managed to sneak in a couple of extra miles in the 36F afternoon sun. By the time I got back to pickup the trail bike it'd clouded over and started to rain. Which turned to sleet, then to ice pellets by the time I finally arrived at Line's.

Now I begin my winter of discontent.

...Black smoke pouring from the funnels behind and beneath me. Dreaming, not keeping lookout, feeling alone, and above, and apart, watching the dawn creep like a painted dream over the sky and sea which slept together. Then the moment of ecstatic freedom came. The peace, the end of the quest, the last harbor, the joy of belonging to a fulfillment beyond men's lousy, pitiful, greedy fears and hopes and dreams! And several other times in my life, when I was swimming far out, or lying alone on a beach, I have had the same experience. Became the sun, the hot sand, green seaweed anchored to a rock, swaying in the tide. Like a saint's vision of beatitude. Like the veil of things as they seem drawn back by an unseen hand. For a second you see -- and seeing the secret, are the secret. For a second there is meaning! Then the hand lets the veil fall and you are alone, lost in the fog again, and you stumble on toward nowhere, for no good reason! …'tis winter in Ontario.
Or something.

I have not thought about calling it a season yet, but I have to admit that I have not had my FJR out of the garage since I got home from EOM. That is unusual for me, but since I retired I no longer commute and I simply have not made time for a pleasure ride.
My wife asked me why I speak so softly around the house. I said that I was worried that someone was listening. She laughed, I laughed, Alexa laughed.

My planned rides end in October...but if a nice sunny warmish day comes along on the weekend in November I try to head to Galena or someplace out west to see triple digits one more time before the machine gets put to bed.

One of these guys ate his twin in utero. Shit, good to see Adam, haven't seen him since SW-FOG 2010 and EOM 2008 before that. OMG! Adam is a comet!
