NEED ASSISTANCE

Post by Canadian FJR »

Not my bike but rider stranded on Cabot Trail
2008 - died while driving. Every time he turns the key the fuel guage flashes 8 times but no start.

Thanks,

Are there any error codes displayed? If the bike's electrical system turns on, try diAG. Had the bike been worked on? Was there weather of some kind? (Had there been an event, like a tip-over?)... You see where this line of questioning is going.

Does the engine warning light flash? It should in a no-start situation.

Access diAG(nostic) display:

Image

Then scroll down to #61 which keeps a record of all fault codes.

Let us know of any stored codes so we can tell you what they mean.

ground spider.

When that happened to me a few years ago, on the way to Tech Day in Owosso in fact - it ended up being the ground spider behind the left side panel (not sure of the number).

He's three hours away and trying to help over the phone. Was working fine, fueled up a few kms before it shit the bed. Currently removing the tank and checking the two connectors unders the tank.

I have never heard of this fuel guage flashing 8 times on an FJR before. Some R1s and R6s indicated a broken wire to the fuel sending unit.

I'll get him to check the DIAG screen - thanks.

If the fuel gauge flashes but the check engine light doesn't come on then it is either a connector to the fuel tank has come loose or as Wayne says, it could well be a ground spider.

If the check engine light does flash then the problem is likely to be found in Fault History.

When in the diagnostic mode, if there are any ERR codes that are prefaced with ERR, these are fundamental system failures which cause a No Start, No Run condition.

Coupler S4 is the usual suspect. If the tank is up for connector inspection, now would be the time to look at S4.

When Dan and I went through the ground system with the NHTSA inspector it was the S4 coupler that led him to write to Yamaha and tell them that they need to do a recall.

Bummer - you always hope it can be fixed in the field.

If it was just the fuel gauge flashing, then it may not be a ground spider. With my case, it was the entire dash panel flashing on / off erratically. It was painfully clear after I got it hauled home how easily I could have fixed it if I had realized it was the ground spider.

With dash things flashing, it draws me to ground spider issues.... S4, S6 and S7 carry the heaviest loads. S4 is under the tank forward part of engine., it's the worst, I'd start there to see if corroded/melted.

It would be good to know if the grounding harness recall was done.
