Cowling clips

Just reading the manual and apparently on my 2013 there are supposed to be clips that lock in the adjustable cowling vents in the fairing. Are they optional or should I worry about the insert popping out at highway speeds?

Do the Cowling Vents feel loose? The GenIII bikes are a little different, but the GenIIs have Dzus fasteners up top and the cowling hinges on the clips below. They come from the factory, correctly clipped in.

Unless something came apart or broke, or again, your cowlings feel loose or flap around, you shouldn't have to buy extra clips.

They don’t feel loose, but acccording to the manual there should be two locking clips at the bottom which are not there.

Are you sure? Have you looked at the empty hole where the fasteners should be?

There is a Dzus fastener with a thumb tab on each side at the bottom rear, turn 90 degrees to remove, 90 degrees to install... a bit finicky but they should be secure... if not, they can fall out.
When removed the panels can be slid forward on their slots to remove, reposition on the other set of slots, slide to the rear to secure, then install Dzus. I can't tell you they'll fall out, likely not but best get the fastener.... piece of tape will keep them from sliding I suppose, until you get the fastener.

Thx, guess I’ll head to the dealer tomorrow, couple of clips will be way cheaper than replacing that panel.

The fasteners can be finicky to get back in and into the lock position... PO may not have got them "locked" and they fell out.

They will keep a bit more water off your knees if raining, and a wee bit more cold breeze if it's freezing out. That's about it.

I can see how it would be of no benefit, don’t really see myself pulling over to the side of the road to adjust them one way or another. Appreciate the info!

Naw, you adjust for the season/weather..... while you're still at home, I wouldn't do it on the road and haven't.

For two years, I adjusted them out for winter and in for summer. After a kerfluffle in another sandbox, I rode for a week with one out and one in. Couldn't tell a difference ... but that was in summer.

I got mine back from a dealership with one in and one out. Doesn't inspire confidence in their work does it.

I notice no differene if you are in or out while riding.

As to the original poster. Not sure I am understanding. On my 13 they slide into two slots (maybe there are clips there). Then in the back there is a small plastic screw type thing you turn a half turn that locks them in place. They are very secure if you get them in right.

When I dropped my bike the first time it skinned one up pretty bad. I replaced it. I think that is the last time I have ever moved them.

If I remember right just slide the panel in the slots and make sure "14" is secure and you are good!

I rode a BMW K1600 around hot, sunny California which had 'slipstream deflectors', sort of a variation of the FJR air deflectors. They were a couple of silly little plastic pieces that rotate outward. I ignored the ridiculous things for most of the trip.



Then one day when it was ~105° I gave in and deployed them. Holy mother of dog! The wind ripped up the inside of my thighs, hit my crotch and went up inside my coat and blew up my coat like a balloon, exited at the neck and blew into the bottom of my helmet and tried to lift my helmet off my head. I have never seen an over-achiever like those slipstream deflectors. Apparently the Yamaha deflectors aren't quite as effective. I've never bothered to open them on my '15. Mebby I'll give 'em a try today so I can say I did something to my FJR.

Don't expect anything like your BMW experience. Be sure to use a low scale Wind Anemometer to get your most accurate reading, you surely won't feel it.

You'll only notice the difference when it's colder and/or wet.... in warm, keep 'em in and you'll get a wee tad mostly unnoticeable airflow on your lower torso. You have to get down and look up perhaps to find those two Dzus fasteners at the rear end.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Those panels are the biggest set of bullshit gimmick do-nothing engineering some clown at Yamaha came up with to kiss his boss's ass. They serve no purpose than to add one more BS part that has the potential to break.

The dummy that came up with that needs a kick in the apple sack.
