Visitors - Bob and Patty

Post by bigjohnsd »

I've been following Bob and Patty for about six months, these two intrepid souls sold most of what they they owned, save for a few motorcycles, pared down their possessions and began traveling the road via motorcycle.

See this thread for the entire backstory:

Then, after fleeing Mexico, returning to Vermont, and leaving two bikes behind in Mexico for later return, retrieval, and more riding they began touring the good old USA.

I saw that they were headed to my Black Hills, reached out and offered them any assistance they needed.
Bob needed tires and both their bikes required oil changes so we had the stuff shipped here.

We took the opportunity to tour the Black Hills on Thursday and Friday and finished up Friday with the requisite maintenance chores.

I've got a few photos.

It was a great couple of days. They camped in the Spearfish City Park, right by the creek and really enjoyed it, I think they had a CAV47/KoolKid like experience.

Bob and Patty are headed to the Rockies, Yellowstone, Red Lodge, Beartooth, Chief Joseph, Grand Tetons next, then down US 191 to a relative's near Salt lake City, then to the South end of the Blue Ridge Parkway before riding the length of the BRP and returning to Vermont in late August.

Great folks, if you follow them along the way ( https://advrider.com/f/threads/retired- ... t-40451528 ) , reach out and lend them a hand if you can, they would fit right into our FJR community.

Their thread is pretty much a “real time” effort. I was reading their thread John linked as they made it known they were needling maintenance items. I was just thinking “I bet If John saw this, he would message them to offer help”. About 3 posts later he had already saw it and reached out. Glad you were able to connect with them.

Say what you want about Stranger danger, but this group of people on this board, especially John and others are ambassadors of the moto community. With all the crap out there in the world professing how everyone is bad and no one takes care of each other anymore, I call straight bullshit. Good on you John for taking care of these people.

It is inspiring, so much so that the other day, I saw a new guy on ADVRIDER from over in Champaign was needing some info about local riding and through stalking his posts, I learned he was from Australia, bought a KLR, and wanted to go riding. I invited him to a gravel ride/ camp out a few of us planned Monday-Wednesday. He told me he had no camping gear, but knew where Walmart was. He picked up some stuff but really didn’t have any luggage. I had some stuff that would fit on a KLR that was not conducive to my skinny backseat. So I told him to meet me for lunch over there and hooked him up. He was gonna use some bungies and a backpack. We had lunch, talked about his riding past and we are meeting up on Monday for a couple days of riding.

My point is not to thread crap in this thread but to say thanks to BigJohn for pulling me into this forum because it was July 2014 that BigJohn did the same thing with me on my first trip out to the Black Hills. I posted up on ADVRIDER for some local knowledge and he chimes in via PM with info about the other sandbox an offer to show me and my buddy around the area.

I got the proof here in a photo of John, Sarge, and another guy from Iowa. Me and my buddy Nick had a great time. Of any of bums don’t like me, blame John! lol. It’s all his fault.

I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!
