A Test Ride today - A Rear Tire and a New Road

Post by bigjohnsd »

A little jaunt today on Freya, wanted to check out the Shinko 705 that I re-installed on the rear wheel. This tire, that I originally installed at the Reuben Run last year, was what drove me to send the wheels to Woody's Wheel Works last winter for straightening and truing. I wasn't 100% certain that the tire was good, it turned out to be fine, no vibration like i had when i put it on at ray's last year. In addition to testing the tire, I wanted to ride a road that I hadn't ridden before to determine if I should add it to my standard Black Hills Touring route for visitors.

This the entire route, 134 miles, the first section was gravel across the Maitland Rd to Central City/Blacktail, then down HWY 385 to Sheridan Lake and Sheridan Lake Rd which in the 25 years I've lived here I don't ever recall having been on.

This is Sheridan Lake Road.
The first 15 miles of the Sheridan Lake Rd were great, good twisties and a 50 mph speed limit with lots of 20 mph marked curves, then we hit some serious road construction. a series of stop and waits, dirt roads, mud, and soft gravel, I was over it by the time I got through it.

As I headed up HWY 44 to Johnson Siding I ran through a thundershower that rinsed off most of the mud on Freya.

Norris Peak Road was wet and the tar snakes were both wet and slippery. The Nemo Road was good as always and i even took a few pix for you guys. From Nemo, I went North on the Vanocker Canyon Rd to avoid thunderstorms to the West. Stayed dry, passed two USFS trucks, and otherwise had an unimpeded run to Sturgis. Slabbed home to beat the storm, which I did.

That looks heavenly. Wide open with no traffic. Not so technical that you can't afford to take your eyes off the road for even one split second. Plenty of view before each apex.

That's a great "touring" road to me.

The Technical end is at the North, the last 6 miles into Sturgis require both hands, thus no more pix.

Very nice John. The pavement looks smooth. Thanks for sharing.
Searching for roads paved with Asphalt, unless I am riding the mighty DR650 bushpig.

Must have been tough timing those pictures when no cages were coming.

Good stuff John.

Btw the New rear 705 came today for Redlodge. Looks like 2 rear to one front. Like!
It's too deep, this is a bike not a canoe.

Doug, I don't think I saw 5 cars in 40 miles.
