FJR1300 Valve Adjustment - Parts List
Ok, I am embarking on the FJR1300 Valve Adjustment in a few weeks on my 2005 and a friends 2006 and I wanted to get a list together of things I will need to make this happen smoothly. When I did my 2003, I needed to replace the cam chain tensioner while I was in there, is that necessary on the 2005?
For the 2005 I think I will need:
Timing Chain Cover Gasket
Coolant Tube o-rings
possibly a valve cover gasket
coolant
maybe a Cam Chain Tensioner?
Plugs (thanks HogTied)
How about for the 2006:
Timing Chain Cover Gasket
possible valve cover gasket
coolant
CCT???

Do you have a shim kit or are you just going to order the sizes you need after you take your measurements? A shim kit is about $100, but it can save you a week of dowtime.

I don't expect to need them....I will order what I need if there is a problem. Both bikes are first check (mine is about 25,000 miles and Howard's is <30,000)

Ive need nothing but the coolant tube o rings on my 07. Third check coming in the next month... Good luck. Oh, coolant, I used new coolant.

I've just done my 95,000 full service on my 03 , engine was as clean as the day it was put together , valves were still in spec , cam chain still in perfect tolerance , changed uridium plugs , synked carbies , filter , all fluids , coolant , brakes , i must say these bikes are pure engineering , very hard to fault , alas this is Australia and we do not have the cold winters as yours , and the salt degredation , due to your icing roads , would be interesting to compare spec wear due to two different climates

And a can of black spray paint for when you clean up the the coolant pipes.

I ordered a valve cover gasket. It's one of those things that if you have it, you won't need it...
So if you get into it, and you end up tearing one, I have one I can overnight to you.
I did the valve check - which is what you're embarking on here - on Vader 1.0 at 28k miles. Everything was on the good side of good, the insides were spotless. That motor was mine from day one, it was taken care of, and run hard. Yamaha engineers got it right...

I have a good local dealer and he keeps all of that stuff in stock...so worse case is that I might have to wait a day. Does the Gen II need to coolant tube o-rings also?
Also, I will probably get a set of the WynPro block off plates to install while I am in there.
Finally, what's the black spray paint for Ken???

You'll be surprised to see how much corrosion there is when you remove the coolant pipes from the cam cover.Finally, what's the black spray paint for Ken???
Done a few valve checks on mine and other FJR's and they all seem to gather debris and water down the recess.
When I take the pipes off I clean them up and paint them, ready to install latter on.
The other trick I do is to clean up then install / silastic the gasket into the cam cover when I remove it.
Much better when it comes to installing the cover.
It's a real bugger trying to keep the gasket in place and not to damage it when fitting the cover.

Ok, here is an interesting question: has ANYONE seen a FJR out of spec at the first Valve Check?

Nope, I'd leave it to at least 80+ K kms. Or if there are any obvious noises.
