Yuasa battery?

Post by Red »

Anybody have a source for an OEM grade Yuasa battery for my FJR? Mine is slowly dying, even with a Battery Tender in play.

Price counts, sure, but I want the durability (lifespan) that comes with the OEM version.

Not interested in other brands, with a sticker saying that it is like the right part number. Not interested in saving weight with exotic materials. Yeah, I can get "equivalent" units almost anywhere. Even the dealer is no help for the brand name battery, here.

TIA.
Cheers,
Red

I just did the Partzilla thing but it's not the Yuasa. I think someone here posted about it, said the GS brand it is, is US made Yuasa or something like that. I felt the same way you did, I wanted the Yuasa (and thought I was getting one).

I recently bought a Yuasa YUAM624B4 YT14B-BS from Amazon.

I bought a genuine Yuasa YT14B-BS from a local dealer for my '07 FJR. Not cheap but it is what I wanted after getting 10 years and 160,000 miles out of the OEM. The OEM Yuasa had a different designation (GS Yuasa). There is a relationship between GS Yuasa (Japan) and Yuasa (US) but it isn't exactly the same company. I can't tell you if the product differs in any significant way or not. The product may not be identical but I had good luck with it for the two years I had it before I sold the '07 and I would buy one again. (The original didn't fail but I changed it because of reduced reserve capacity - still cranked strongly but not for long) I still have the OEM battery in my 2011 and it is doing very well (only 75,000 miles).

There are two Yuasa plants, one in PA which makes the aftermarket YT series, you fill with the acid pack that comes with it and activate it. It is an AGM.
Partzilla has the more OEM GT series, which is made by the parent GS Yuasa. Closest to OEM as you'll get I'd imagine.

The FJR OEM battery is the longest lasting OEM battery that I've ever had in anything that requires a battery. Period.

On the FJR1300 thread on ADV Rider, I got into a discussion with some guy that basically took his bike apart to re-locate the battery to a lower more centralized position so that he could lean his bike more and thin out his chicken strips. he he he.....

The one I got from Amazon came with the acid in a separate container. It was simple and safe to pour it in. The battery is an AGM and once I put the acid in I put the permanent caps on the cells. The most difficult part for me is squeezing the battery into it's home on the FJR because I have a bunch of aftermarket wires in there.

Wow, that is inexpensive - even if it only lasts half as long as a Yuasa.

I just added one to the cart to see what the total charges would be. With PA sales tax and shipping it was $40. I've been ordering from them for years. Batteries are only manufactured in a few places. I have nothing to do with this place, but I recommend them all the time due to the high quality and cost savings.

The Yuasa 6.3Ah for my KTM 500 was almost as much as the 12Ah for the FJR.
Shouldn't it be a little more than half the price?

My Yamaha Zuma scooter eats batteries. They seem to last about a year. I just ordered one of these from Batterysharks that fits.
Price is certainly right. Thanks for the post.

@Deagle10, Do you keep the scoot battery on a tender? Just curious.

I haven't. I've never kept any of my bikes on batteries. As we all know, the FJR battery just lasts forever and I've never used a tender. My Waverunner battery I keep on a tender all winter and that thing still dies every 2-3 years, no matter the brand.

I'm willing to try this with the scooter though. Good thought. The batteries are cheap but haven't lasted.

Also, I bought it on Ebay (seller Battery Sharks). Ebay has what I assume is a 3rd party company that offers a warranty. I've noticed their warranty varies but for 3 years on this battery was $2.51. So I have a 3 year battery for under $26 shipped. Of course we'll see how well the warranty works in time.....

Re: Yuasa battery?

The worst thing you can do is overcharge a battery - some people use a trickle charger as opposed to a temperature compensated battery tender. (Or the battery tender is mis-calibrated and allows the voltage to remain above the "float" voltage.)
The second worst thing is to allow the battery to repeatedly discharge completely. It doesn't take many deep discharges to kill a AGM battery. Some vehicles have a high parasitic draw and allow the battery to go flat in a fairly short period of time. My FJR has a negligible parasitic draw and I can easily start the bike after a couple of months of inactivity. (In winter, I do a top-up charge every couple of months.)

In my experience, Yuasa batteries typically have a very low self-discharge rate - at least the ones I have had.
