Another New Guy

Hi All,

I've been lurking for quite some time. I am from the Minneapolis area, and currently own a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and a Yamaha V-Star Classic. I've been considering adding an FJR to my stable for a couple of years. Yesterday, I pulled the plug and put a down payment on a 2020 ES. The dealer told me it will arrive within 2 weeks. I plan to do a lot of touring in the coming years, and neither of my current bikes is sufficient for my needs - God knows I have tried. I am confident the FJR will do the job.

Welcome aboard!

The FJR is a great bike and capable of doing a lot of things really well. Don't be too surprised if you have 2 bikes for sale in the not distant future.

Don't let the mods fool you. You don't have to have your temperature taken or not post for two weeks.

As for touring on the FJR. You will get tired long before the bike does.

Thank you all for the welcome. This is a helluva sandbox you have, here. Lots of information to keep me reading for quite awhile. I have read about issues people have had with new bikes not having the front axle greased, screws loc-tited, and dry driveshafts. Is anyone aware of any preventive actions I can take with the dealer when they are assembling my new ride? Is this something I should mention to them?

I would message ionbeam for that checklist.

You can mention the items to your dealer but I would trust your own work rather than some junior mechanic at the dealer. Other than putting locktite on the saddlebag screws there is nothing to worry about for the first year. Just go ride the hell out of it!

Like JWilly said, Locktite your saddle bag latch screws. I recently pickup a new to me 17 FJR. At 16800 miles one screw was missing on each latch and the remaining screws were loose.

It's right on the saddlebag instruction sheet for them to loctite the screws, but they don't do it...... I wouldn't think the dealer is going to go much beyond what Yamaha has delivered (i.e., whatever grease or not they put on at the factory). Dealer doesn't do a lot but take it out of the crate and assemble the front wheel... mostly.
I would ride it and take care of some stuff at first tire change... prior to that, there is a 600 mile service (oil change, rear diff oil change) but I'd ask them to re-torque the steering head bearings also, as we've found most need it. Throw in a throttle body sync, not sure what the dealer's list is... you can ask that now.

Welcome, Blister1; I recently visited Atlanta, MN, on my FJR. Yes, this bike will take you anywhere there's pavement, and many other places if the dirt is hard-packed.
