How long is it safe to ride???
With a leaking fork seal?
Put a brand new PR2 on the front of Frankenbike Thurs 1/27/13 and discovered a sickening, slimey residue all over the right fork leg. Bust hasn't been over, so I have to assume the spooge is Yamajizz.
What's the downside in commuting with the fat cow with a leaky seal, and how long can I procrastinate this fix?

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Ha. First post on the newly revived FJRIDERS and I'm going to link to the other place. See my escapade here.
It was about a month from discovering the splooge to getting parts and a free weekend.
I don't think you're gonna destroy anything by riding it, but it's gonna be messy. I remember coming home from that bridge ride (which is where I think the seal failed) with oil on my face shield, wondering where it had come from.

Are you the reason I'm so far above average???

Guess if they'll let a Manatee Molester in here, a Burro Besmircher couldn't be far behind.beemerdons wrote:Oh for God's sake, they let the Manatee Molester in here? What's next, are they going to allow the fecking English in here too?

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Hey Howie, you might want to try the paper trick and make sure there isn't a piece of debris between the seal and the tube. That works sometimes. If it isn't leaking real bad you will have a while as long as it stays away from your brakes.Radiohowie wrote:With a leaking fork seal?

Don't do as I did. Let it go until it saturated the brakes on that side. When she wouldn't stop, it kinda became an issue.

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Watch for it leaking on the brakes obviously. I think a slow link isn't a problem until you lose so much that the two forks start acting differently in behavior.

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
A mate of mine rode 1K kms for a visit, he had a sligh fork leak.
He initally thought he had a weeping clutch master cylinder.
By the time he arrived back home, fork oil was squirting up over the clutch lever and front brakes.
Great to see the Forum up and running again, thanks

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Experience talking here:
I rode it for a couple thousand or more miles. It was ok, but the handling degraded severly over time. Also, you want to keep the oil off the brake discs and pads, its bad news if it gets there.
All that being said, it took me a total of 45 minutes to replace it having never done it before. If you are brave enough to pull the seal without disasembling the entire fork, it saves A LOT of time and frustration. The down side is you can't clean everything out inside to sparkly new condition. My descision ot just pull the seal from the outside was based on the WAG that the thing was working, and only lost some oil so replenishing it and a new seal should be good enough.
Lo and behold, it was. Worked fine.

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
How the hell did you get the seal out without disassembling the fork? Just tear it up with pliers or something?

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Carefully drill a hole in the metal part, drive in a sheet metal screw and pull.
Used to do that on crank seals and stuff on cars. Works like a charm.

Re: How long is it safe to ride???
Only my second or third visit to THIS sandbox...got to get my post count up so I can watch Bust degrade himself in the "Sheep's Pen", so back on topic,
My fork quit leaking....like the next day after finding oil running down the fork leg. Must've been a piece of grit or sumpthin' ... OR, the tech who changed my tire attempted a "hey, you need to get this fixed" on something that wasn't broken. Maybe want' even MY fork oil, just something dripped down the upper tube, all over the lower.
So, thanks for all the advice, and beemerdons? YOU KNOW!!!
