Muffler Repacking
If I’m going to continue to use my beautiful Yoshimura R77 exhaust, they will need to be repacked. I’m deciding whether to fool with it.
For those with experience doing this, how big
of a pain is it?
Yoshimura uses closed-end rivets rather than common pop rivets. Can a manual rivet gun be used for these, or is a pneumatic gun required?
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Re: Muffler Repacking
Any help?
I looked into repacking some Leo Vince and found some useful "How to" videos.
There are others on the Yoshi cans as well.

Re: Muffler Repacking
I repacked Hindle cans on both my old KLR and the TLS. Pretty simple and worth the time. Gets rid of the tin sound.
Simply drilled out the old rivets, remove the innards and clean things up. Wrap the new packing very snug and then use packing tape to keep things neat. Slide everything back together and then use your hand rivet gun. The tape will burn off in short order.

Re: Muffler Repacking
I repacked the Vance & Hines on my Buell which was really just obnoxious by the time I decided to do it. Like mentioned above pretty easy to do and well worth the time.

Re: Muffler Repacking
Good stuff guys. Yosh actually has a bit of a how-to-video. I’m going to enlist the help of a friend to do this when the kits arrive.
Will try to remember to take pictures and post them for folks that have yet to take the plunge.
Best I can gather, though there are many sets of aftermarket cans on the road that “require” periodic repacking, very few are ever repacked.
I do know that riding the bike today with the original mufflers was like heaven. Huge noise difference. Repacking will make the R77’s almost that quiet again.

Re: Muffler Repacking
I think 20,000 on the yoshimuras? Maybe a little less? Look like new. For about the first 2/3’s of their service, no noticeable change. One the innards start breaking down, it’s a matter of time, as they get progressively louder. Always possible, if not probable, that riding style and conditions may play a role in repack frequency.

Re: Muffler Repacking
There is no packing in the stock cans, just two tubes and baffles... saw a pic somewhere if I can find it.

Re: Muffler Repacking
Same with some aftermarket mufflers like the Staintunes I have on my 2011. (Came with the bike)
My 2007 came with a set of Leo Vince cans on it (these have a fiber pack) Bike had 12,000 miles on it and maybe about half that on the mufflers. I never loved the sound so I switched them out for the OEM ones at 50,000 miles or so. Lots of people love the sound and appearance but it isn't my thing - I prefer quieter. I think that they were becoming a bit louder at that point but not awful by most standards. Thought about repacking them but realized I probably wouldn't put them back on the bike anyway. I think 50 to 75,000 miles is typical for a repack but it depends on the cans. how you ride, and what sound you like. I always used the quiet baffles.
Still have the LV. Should probably clean them up and sell them sometime.

When your muffler needs repacking, the best of the best earplugs won’t attenuate the sound. DAMHIK.
