had my '08 loaded down for a camping trip when i noticed the rear end was crazy sloppy. push down on the back and let go and she'd keep boucing like a wore out crown victoria. the adjuster lever on the bottom was loose and appears to be stripped out. thinking it may be time for an aftermarket bit, what seems to be the popular set up for these bikes?

Depends on how much you want to spend.
Some revalve the OE, I went with a Penske. Some go Ohlins.
If you change styles alot (2 vs 1 up) get a remote preload adjuster

i never ride 2 up as wifey hates bikes, really don't load down all that heavy when touring either.

Ohlin's YA-036 with the correct spring for your weight in riding gear. Front springs to match as well, fork internals if you can swing it.
The '036 gives you rebound and compression, but no remote preload adjustment - spanner wrenches would be needed to adjust preload. The YA-707 has the remote pre-load adjuster, and the price reflects that.

All depends on how much money you can or want to spend and the adjustiblity and ease of adjusting you get for it. Ohlins, Penske, Racetech all make great setups. Then the next issue is now that you have a great shock setup, you're gonna want to work on the forks...

I did the GP fork upgrade and Penske 8983 with remote. Worth every penny.

I Did a Penske Rear Traxxion AK-20 front with their springs and what not. Love it. Previous to this I did Racetech fork springs and had the rear shock rebuilt, revalved, resprung with Hyperpro Progressive. It is all in a drawer at home if that tells you anything.

just out of curiosity. The lever, stripped. you mean the hard soft bit? or the twisty rebound adjuster on the bottom? I have all the parts from my old shock. the adjuster and the cable etc. if your cables broke that run the spring adjuster and you just don't wanna spend the money on new aftermarket yet. let me know I can send you the adjuster and the parts. but it kinda sounds like you lost all dampening so.... that is a whole nuther animal.

Just the plastic lever do hickey that is held on with one screw on the bottom of the shock. Honestly I haven't really dug into it yet as I'm a bit suspension dumb. No clue how that dumb lever is supposed to work

It needs Maint.. . . Has about 20,000 since rebuild. Built for me and my wife two up so sprung for bike and 260 ish plus luggage? Can't find the receipt with spring weight? I need something to put on for when I sell and keep penske or need penske rebuilt. I say all that because I didn't have any luck finding a person to rebuild this shock a second time. I know they are there but the guy who built mine can't be found anymore. It must have been Sasquatch. Word over on ADV is he got a lengthy prison sentence for kiddy porn or some such. I also heard he did fantastic work. I think I'd need about an 850 lb spring and that would be a bit on the firm side. Had you felt it was worn out already or did you just replace it due to mileage?

Miles actually but, I found a different reason for my weaving bike. It may be just fine and i think the 850 sounds about right but it is a progressive wound spring. and you are correct on the rebuilder.
