Stupid Aux Fuel Question

Post by bill lumberg »

Short of MSR fuel bottles, what is the best way to carry extra fuel without giving up the rear seat and topcase? I use a topcase all the time. But as many ill-situated gas stations as I find when I’m in new territory, I find myself thinking about how much time I could save without going to a pump. Or only going to a pump for every other tank. Even if it meant fueling/transferring on a roadside or just off a ramp.

At this point, a 1.75 gallon rotopak on each bag guard is leading...

No shit, Alan. Funny, I had the same image in my mind.

But I doubt Bill Lumberg was gonna use them for feelers, or scrapers. He's too smart for that and doesn't seem to be the suicidal type, atleast not lately since he's been to Margueritaville.

There is a tank that mounts in the same place as the rear licence plate. There is a small pump that pumps it up into the main tank.

You can do tail dragger tanks as well as cells that fit inside a sidecase. Lots of options. Make sure they are "cells" (Summit, etc.) instead of repurposed beer kegs (or the like). That will help raise your chances in an impact.

This is the first tank that Dirtracker(?) Harry Slaughter of Iowa built for his FJR a few years ago. It is a 9 gallon tank, complete with the fuel pump, so it is basically plug and play to switch tanks. I bought it at the end of 2017. I saw several of the larger versions on FJRs at the IBR this year. My 9 gallon size poses no problems with the handlebars or tank bag interference. I considered painting it red, but I think the blue kinda complements the red :D

There are fuel cells that go in place of the back seat but don't mess with the top case. If you carry a passenger then the Tail dragger is the one. The Frankentank is a great way to go but probably not cheap

I looked closely at the giant loop fuel bladders.
But reviews are decidedly mixed. I’m not ready to permanently give up topcase or rear seat. But I’m at that place that I assume folks get to when they start flirting with conventional cells. I do too much stuff besides distance to stay rigged for distance year round. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it...

A lot of rear tank installations are not that hard to pull when you need the space but not the distance between gas stations.

The Tag along tank by Joe2oolmaker is nice and only 2 bolts to remove in order to replace the rear seat.
Let me warn you though... looking into aux fuel is a slippery slope... once you have one bike with an extended fuel capacity you'll want that capacity on every bike there after.

Just a thought, being the cost conscious, yet still wanting it be conveniently functional bastage that I am, I took a seat pan and mounted a 4 gallon fuel cell to it, then plumbed the fuel line with quick connects that seal on both ends when disconnected. It only takes a minute to convert from one mode back to the other.
