I decided to make another donation because I'm choosing to donate to things that make me happy and bring positive energy into the world. Thanks for all that you do to make that happen, Wayne.extrememarine wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:20 am Thank you, I did not make the post global; but I did add it to the banner announcement under the calendar order link.

Re: 2025 Donations to support FJRiders.com
Serious question. I know we've been down this road before so if it's just too much of hassle for you (Wayne) to deal with as Riders is essentially a hobby I get it.
So with that caveat... Is there anyway pictures can be hosted locally? Is it a cost issue? Frankly I'd rather pay for this site than pay for a photo hosting site that changes it's terms/cost all the time. Even Tapatalk has a cost now. To be clear I'm not suggesting paying for riders, but if you need more donations to cover storage and bandwidth what would that amount be? Maybe I'm just getting lazier but it's too many steps for me to host photos somewhere else and cut and paste links etc... So I rarely post photos anymore. For example I just did a little project of pouring a small concrete pad outside my garage and mounted my No-Mar to it. I took a few photos and then when I went to post it here I would have to start a new account at hosting site, pay for it, and then cut and past links etc. or re-download tapatalk and pay for that. Instead, I just decided not to share. When so many platforms just allow me to post it seems like we should do the same here.
If it's just a cost issue, meaning all you have to do is enable photos and then pay for the storage/bandwidth lets do it. If it's a giant project of plug-ins, upgrades, and a huge cost increase, then forget it. And for all of you that will post saying all I need to do cut and paste links from some free site... save it. Not interested. I have too many things that require my time. If I can save a few minutes posting directly I will, if it cost me too much time I won't.
Again, I want to stress, while this is technically me complaining, I totally get it. So as I said at the top, If it's just too much of a hassle don't bother.

I think Wayne explained this before..... the service contract he has, should one wish to enable hosting, has a strict rule in that any "dubious" photos are posted, the provider will shut the whole board down....

Re: 2025 Donations to support FJRiders.com
Ray, I appreciate your input but that's not the question. The question is: Can wayne enable it or is the overhead (cost/time) prohibitive?
The answer can be as simple as, I don't want to, and that's fine. Then myself and probably some other people won't be sharing images. That's all.

I wish I had a link to Wayne's response that explains the situation better. Embedded in that response there is a clear and rational reason for why he does not embed the photos on the website. I likely have this wrong, but this is my rough understanding... Yes, he has the ability to host photos, but It is my understanding that in the language written in the agreement with the software/website that he and the rest of us can be locked out or something from this forum website if someone is found to have placed pornography files and published them for the rest of the forum to view. I believe that since he does not want to take the risk of losing everything if some dickhead or nefarious person does something like that.
I likely don't have that correct, but I don't think its that far off.
In the meantime, the process of hosting photos off site is no different for me than ezboard in 2004, the blue room in 2006, or FJRiders in 2013.
I had to host offsite whenever I had to flip you the bird...
Or show you my Iggy poster I have on my wall...

Re: 2025 Donations to support FJRiders.com
@Oface - good question.
1 - At last check, there was no native feature to this software plateform (phpBB V3.3.13) that allows photo hosting organically. So it is not a cost issue with this software - the feature is not present. It is not a storage space or bandwidth issue with the host either. My current agreement includes unlimited server space (but I'm sure there is fine print that limits it somehow).
2 - Other forum software platforms may have the feature included; and there is likely a fee or cost to enabling that feature and for the software in general. phpBB is open source - i.e. there is no cost to use the software, and it currently has continious development / improvements (also at no cost).
3 - There are ways to solve this puzzle (members hosting images on my webhost) with software (that is also open source (aka free). I currently use PIWIGO (Piwigo.org). There is no "connector" or extension for phpBB that integrates the photo hosting within the forum software.
4 - The biggest risk to option 3 is the webhosts (InMotion.com) terms of use / acceptable use policy that I agree to as part of service agreement I have as their customer. The terms include language that states should they find what they determine as "pornographic material" - images, etc - that they will terminate the account. That means no appeal process, no access to any of the data / files / images I have hosted on their server. It's lights out, have a nice day, we're never talking to you ever again. Understand that everything that makes this site run is located on their server. It's not on my laptop, not on Tim's home server farm (he'll deny existance of said server farm, but come on, he's a firmware engineer - he's got one...) etc. I don't download backups daily (there are backups running, but stored on the server).
We talked about this for a good bit at Tech Day. The general question was why could I not have a user agreement for each member (that wanted to use the picture hosting solution) that banned porn and if a single member violated that user agreement, that one user account would be removed. I could have that, but if the webhost (InMotion.com) finds something and terminates my account - we're all in the dark. The general option was how can they hold me (Wayne) accountable for what someone else posted?? - well, it's all under my webhost account, so they only see it as me(Wayne).
The question did make me check to see if there are any new phpBB extensions available for image posting. I did find something new that I will investigate this week. It's an extension that allows photo hosting using the "postimage.org" site - this may be an acceptable path for those who want to post a picture "now and then" and need a hosting solution. I know there was discussion about Postimage.org - I'll need to look for that as well. The interesting thing about is that the extension allows you to get the image uploaded (to the postimage.org site) and insert it into your post without leaving this site.

Re: 2025 Donations to support FJRiders.com
It doesn’t have to be a lights out scenario. Super easy to grab a backup of the database once a week or month and download. FTP the rest of the site in minutes. That part rarely changes so once a month or six months could work for that. They pull the plug, you just change your name servers to the new hosting company and the lights are back on.
I’m sure someone here, self included, could help get that done if needed.
I setup and ran a forum and online store many years ago. I paid the host to do that. Came in one day and the site was done. Called him and he said there were no back ups. I reminded him that he charged me for it. His reply was that he changed the services included with each plan and he had removed that service.
In an instant, the online store, all its sales history, and a phpbb forum were gone.
I vowed, never again.
