There are two schools of thought on JIS screwdrivers. This article is is pro JIS this one says it don't matter anymore and a representative from Vessel says they stopped making JIS screwdrivers a few years ago, because their current lineup will work with both Phillips and JIS screws.

Let the technical howling begin.

Recently I removed a sticky Phillips screw from my DR using a 50 year old Montgomery Ward Hand Impact Driver with a #2 bit. It took 12 wacks but the screw came out and will be replaced with an Allen head screw. The number #2 bit has seen better days so I ordered two new ones from McMaster-Carr.

Let me ask.... Back in the day when Japanese FJRs came with a tool kit, was the included star pattern screwdriver a JIS or Phillips? (And, why don't I know without going down the garage to look?)

I have never really looked, but the rumor is the screwdriver in the tool kit is a JIS. That's been talked about a lot on the other Forum. Its probably been 10 years since I looked at my OEM toolkit, so conformation would be a good thing.

Well, while looking forward to the JIS bits, after reading a bunch of that, I'm back to making an improvement to the Phillips by grinding a tad off the pointy tip to let it go into a JIS...... then to really confuse you, what about the Posidrive (PZ1, PZ2, etc.), which had a sharp rib right in the valley of the grind, which won't work on anything but a Posidrive screw (has a mating valley to accept that slight rib)..... IKEA uses those, and do you think you can go find a Posidrive bit at your local hardware? Nope, seems Posidrive (far superior to Phillips IMHO) has lost favour. A Phillips driver will cam right out of a PZ, and I'll bet so will a JIS. When my bits come in, I'll compare brand new to the one in the OEM tool kit.

I have used JIS since I started out in RC helis back in 97 ish. They all use JIS. Most (but not all) Japanese import cars use JIS.

GM uses Posi-drive which is not Phillips or JIS. It's another proprietary "solution" to the cross head conundrum.

But wait, there's more!

Reed-Prince made another crosshead screw that sucked just as bad as the rest.

Phillips-King also had a type that was kinda like Phillips ...but different...and still sucked, but on aircraft.

There are others, but I can't remember them all. But I do know they all sucked.

Also, if you have some BS manufacturer that doesn't maintain their stamping dies (or just uses shitty ones to begin with) then it really doesn't matter what kind of driver you have...it won't fit anyway.

Cross head screws suck. (Not sure if I said that already)

The JIS bits arrived yesterday...I think I’ll put a piece of heat shrink on the shaft ( of the screwdriver bits, you animals..) so they dont get confused with the plethora of other bits...Then I’m going to wander around the neighbourhood practicing random acts of loosening..

It depends on which person you plan on "adjusting" the looseness of their connectors...are they good with a rifle?
